Heating licenses in North Carolina are split into 3 groups. Heating Group 2 covers systems with a mechanical refrigeration capacity greater than 15 tons. The Heating Group 2 License in North Carolina can be utilized for the installation, repair, and servicing of systems for heating or cooling a building consisting of an assemblage of interacting components producing conditioned air to raise or lower the temperature and having a mechanical refrigeration capacity in excess of fifteen tons, and which circulates air. Systems installed in single-family residences are included under heating group number three, regardless of size. Includes fuel piping qualifications.
Technicians are permitted to work on forced air heating/cooling system with cooling capacity in excess of fifteen (15) tons. Must be a sub-licensee of a H2 Contractor. This is not a contracting license.

North Carolina does not require any Continuing Education for this type of license. North Carolina has no reciprocity agreements for Heating Group 2 licensees.

In order to sit for the exam, you must submit the application for licensure to the state. It must include verified education and work experience as required by the state. Upon application approval, the applicant will receive written notification which will include instructions for scheduling the examination, which must be taken within thirty (30) days of the date of the notification letter.
After studying with RocketCert, you will be on your way to passing the required State exam(s) (see below). Pre-approval is required. Testing centers are setup throughout the State in larger cities.
After completing all the steps above, it will be time to apply through the NC State Board of Examiners of Plumbing, Heating, and Fire Sprinkler Contractors to obtain your North Carolina Heating Group 2 License. North Carolina Contractors must pass two examinations: the Heating Group 2 Exam and the Business and Law exam. Business and Law is not required if the applicant holds an active contractor license with this Board and the applicant passed the Board’s Business and Law Exam after August, 2003.
Upon application approval, the applicant will receive instructions for scheduling the examination.
Note: North Carolina will be updating their building codes on January 1st, 2025. However, they have not yet announced when the exams will be updated to the new code books.
