North Carolina requires a Plumbing License prior to the bidding or contracting any plumbing work. Class 1 is required for residential, commercial, industrial and institutional buildings. The North Carolina Plumbing and Business and Law exams are open book. The references are permitted to be tabbed and highlighted! Unfortunately, our online course is NOT permitted to be accessed during the State exam.

What type of work can be done with the North Carolina plumbing license?

Plumbing License
A Plumbing License in North Carolina can be utilized for work on the system of pipes, fixtures, apparatus and appurtenances, installed upon the premises, or in a building, to supply water thereto and to convey sewage or other waste there from. Includes fuel piping qualification.
- Class I Plumbing License - Required for licensed work in residential, commercial, industrial and institutional buildings.
- Class II Plumbing License - Allows work in single family detached residential dwellings only.
What are the requirements to getting a North Carolina plumbing license?
Financial Requirements
- Two (2) years (4,000 hours) of full-time experience in the installation, maintenance, service, or repair of plumbing systems related to the category for which a license is sought, whether or not a license was required for the work performed.
- Up to one-half (2,000 hours) (45 quarter hours or 30 semester hours) of the experience requirement may be in academic or technical training directly related to the field of endeavor for which the examination is requested.
How do I obtain a North Carolina plumbing license?
To apply for your plumbing license, contact the North Carolina State Board of Examiners of Plumbing, Heating, and Fire Sprinkler Contractors at 919-875-3612 or visit nclicensing.org.
North Carolina Plumbers are not required to complete continuing education to renew their license. North Carolina has no reciprocity agreements for Plumbing licensees. However, the do have a technical exam waiver that could allow you to be exempt from the technical exam. You must still meet North Carolina's experience requirements and pass the business and law exam. Currently they only offer exam waivers if you hold one of the following licenses in South Carolina: Residential Plumbing or Residential HVAC.

Submit Application
In order to sit for the North Carolina plumbing exam, you must submit the application for licensure to the state. It must include verified education and work experience as required by the state. Upon application approval, the applicant will receive written notification which will include instructions for scheduling the examination, which must be taken within thirty (30) days of the date of the notification letter.
PASS THE STATE OR NATIONAL EXAM(S)
After studying with RocketCert, you will be on your way to passing the required State exam(s) (see below). Pre-approval is required. Testing centers are setup throughout the State in larger cities.
APPLY FOR YOUR LICENSE
After completing all the steps above, it will be time to apply through the NC State Board of Examiners of Plumbing, Heating, and Fire Sprinkler Contractors to obtain your North Carolina Plumbing License. Which plumbing license exam do I need to take in North Carolina?
North Carolina Plumbing Contractors must pass two examinations: the Plumbing Exam and the Business and Law exam. Business and Law is not required if the applicant holds an active contractor license with this Board and the applicant passed the Board’s Business and Law Exam after August, 2003.
Upon application approval, the applicant will receive instructions for scheduling the examination.
Note: North Carolina will be updating their building codes on January 1st, 2025. However, they have not yet announced when the exams will be updated to the new code books.
