North Carolina Fuel Piping License
Fuel Piping Licensing, Education & Exam Prep
A Fuel Piping License is available to those who wish to engage in the bidding or contracting of fuel piping work without obtaining a standard plumbing or Heating license. Fuel piping privileges are included in the Plumbing and Heating Group 1, 2, and 3 licenses, and do not require a separate examination for persons applying for or currently holding one or more of these licenses. For Fuel Distribution (PU) licenses, a separate examination is required. We currently do not offer exam prep for the Fuel Distribution exam.

Fuel Piping
North Carolina developed the Fuel Piping License for those who do not possess the required Class I or Class II plumbing or heating license, but desire to engage in the contracting or installing of fuel piping extending from an approved fuel source at or near the premises, which piping is used or may be used to supply fuel to any systems, equipment, or appliances located inside the premises.
What are the requirements to getting a license?
Financial Requirements- 1 year (2,000 hours) of experience in the installation, maintenance, service, or repair of fuel piping.
- Up to one-half (1,000 hours) (22 quarter hours or 15 semester hours) of the experience may be in academic or technical training directly related to fuel piping
How do I obtain a license?
To apply for your license, contact the North Carolina State Board of Examiners of Plumbing, Heating, and Fire Sprinkler Contractors at 919-875-3612 or visit nclicensing.org.
The Board does not require any continuing education to renew this type of license. North Carolina has no reciprocity agreements for Fuel Piping licensees.

In order to sit for the exam, you must submit the application for licensure to the state. It must include verified education and work experience as required by the state. Upon application approval, the applicant will receive written notification which will include instructions for scheduling the examination, which must be taken within thirty (30) days of the date of the notification letter.
After studying with RocketCert, you will be on your way to passing the required State exam(s) (see below). Pre-approval is required. Testing centers are setup throughout the State in larger cities.
After completing all the steps above, it will be time to apply through the NC State Board of Examiners of Plumbing, Heating, and Fire Sprinkler Contractors to obtain your North Carolina Fuel Piping License. Which exam do I need to take?
NC Contractors must pass two examinations: the Fuel Piping Exam and the Business and Law exam. Business and Law is not required if the applicant holds an active contractor license with this Board and the applicant passed the Board’s Business and Law Exam after August, 2003.
Upon application approval, the applicant will receive instructions for scheduling the examination.
Note: North Carolina will be updating their building codes on January 1st, 2025. However, they have not yet announced when the exams will be updated to the new code books.

How do I pass the exam?
The North Carolina Fuel Piping and Business and Law exams are open book. These references are permitted to be tabbed and highlighted! Unfortunately, our online course is NOT permitted to be accessed during the State exam.
