Electrical Contractor License
An Electrical Contractor is a person who is in the business of contracting to install, erect, repair or alter electrical equipment for the generation, transmission or utilization of electrical energy.
What are the requirements to getting a license?
Electrical Contractor License- Be 21 years of age or older
- Hold a high school diploma or equivalency certificate; and
- 5 years’ practical hands-on work experience in approved electrical work. This can be in the form of:
- Completion of a 4-year board approved electrical apprenticeship program and 1 year of hands on experience
- Satisfying the requirements for a Journeyman Electrician and have 1 year of hands-on experience.
- A bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering and completion of two years of practical hands-on experience
- Working in the field of Electrical Contracting for at least five years immediately preceding the date of application.
How do I obtain a license?
To apply for your license, contact the New Jersey State Board of Examiners of Electrical Contractors at 973-504-6410 or visit the board website.
Up to 34 hours of continuing education prior to each renewal. Also, New Jersey has no reciprocity agreements.

If found eligible, the applicant will receive an Examination Eligibility Notice that includes instructions for scheduling and paying for the exams through the testing company, PSI .

How do I pass the exam?
The New Jersey exams are open book, and based on the 2023 NEC. Our Bundle will include a copy of the NEC 2023 for studying, but the testing agency will provide a copy of the code book to be used during the actual exam. The tabs included in the bundle should be used with your copy of the code book in order to become familiar with the location of the content in the book.

If you already own the 2020 NEC, you may still use this edition during the exam until 12/31/2024.
