New Jersey Alarm Systems License and Exam
Alarm Systems Licensing & Exam Prep

These licenses are administered by the New Jersey Fire Alarm, Burglar Alarm and Locksmith Advisory Committee. What type of work can be done with this license?
Fire Alarm License
"Fire alarm" means a security system comprised of an interconnected series of alarm devices or components, including systems interconnected with radio frequency signals, which emits an audible, visual or electronic signal indicating an alarm condition and which provides a warning of the presence of smoke or fire. "Fire alarm" does not include an energy management system whose primary purpose is telecommunications with energy control, the monitoring of the interior environment being an incidental feature thereto.
Burglar Alarm License
"Burglar alarm" means a security system comprised of an interconnected series of alarm devices or components, including systems interconnected with radio frequency signals, which emits an audible, visual or electronic signal indicating an alarm condition and providing a warning of intrusion, which is designed to discourage crime.
Electronic Security Systems - Burglar/Fire Alarm
"Electronic security system" means a security system comprised of an interconnected series of devices or components, including systems with audio and video signals or other electronic systems, which emits or transmits an audible, visual or electronic signal warning of intrusion and provides notification of authorized entry or exit, which is designed to discourage crime. "Electronic security systems" include access control systems, CCTV systems, intercom systems and other electronic monitoring devices.
What are the requirements to getting a license?
New Jersey Fire/Burglar Alarm License Requirements
To qualify for the exam, the applicant must submit proof of the following:
- At least 18 years of age
- Has not been convicted of a first, second, or third degree crime in the last 10 years
- Has not been convicted of a fourth degree offense of engaging in the unlicensed practice of electrical contracting
- High School Diploma or GED
- Successfully completed the Fire Alarm Examination
- At least 4 years of experience in Fire Alarm business, which can be satisfied by one of the following:
- Completed at least 4 years hands-on experience & 80 hours of technical courses
- Technical trainings below can account for 10 hours
- Bachelors Degree in Electrical Engineering, and one year of hands-on experience (1,680 hours)
- Completed minimum of one-year course in the study of trade-related electronics at a technical school, 3 years hand-on experience (5,040 hours)
- 2 hours of training in the Barrier Free Subcode, N.J.A.C. 5:23-7
- 2 hours of training in the New Jersey Uniform Construction Code, N.J.A.C. 5:23, exclusive of the Barrier Free Subcode
- 2 hours of training in the Americans with Disabilities Act Code, 36 CFR 1191
- 2 hours of training in industrial safety
- 2 hours of training in New Jersey law and rules governing the provision of fire alarm services

Which exam do I need to take?
After receiving a complete application packet, PSI will contact the applicant with an exam date and time, typically two weeks prior to exam date.

How do I pass the exam?
The New Jersey exams are open book. The references below are permitted to be tabbed, highlighted, and used during your test! Unfortunately, our online course is NOT permitted to be accessed during the State exam.
