What type of work can be done with this license?

Licensed Electrician in Nebraska
  • Residential Journeyman Electrical License

    Is licensed to wire for or install electric wiring, apparatus, and equipment for residential installations and to supervise apprentice electricians anywhere in the State of Nebraska. Residential installations are defined as installations intended for a single-family or two-family residential dwelling, or a multi-family residential dwelling not larger than three stories in height.

  • Journeyman Electrical License

    A Journeyman Electrician is licensed to install electrical wiring, apparatus, and equipment, and to supervise apprentice electricians, anywhere in the State of Nebraska.

  • Electrical Contractor License

    An Electrical Contractor is licensed to bid, plan, layout, install and supervise the installation of electrical wiring, apparatus, and equipment anywhere in the State of Nebraska.

What are the requirements to getting a license?

Master Electrical RequirementsResidential Journeyman Electrician

Applicants must meet these pre-qualifications prior to sitting for the Residential Journeyman Exam:

  • Have at least three years experience, acceptable to the board, in the electrical trade. (Registration as an apprentice electrician for those years shall, on the approval of the board, may constitute evidence of such experience)
    • The board may by rule or regulation provide for the allowance of one year of experience credit for successful completion of a two-year post-high school electrical course approved by the board
Journeyman Electrical RequirementsJourneyman Electrician

Applicants must meet these pre-qualifications prior to sitting for the Journeyman Exam:

  • Be registered as an apprentice with the board during time employed by an Electrical Contractor.
    AND
  • Four years / 8,000 hours of employment history while employed by an Electrical Contractor.
  • The board awards one year's experience credit for successful completion of a two-year post high school electrical course, which is acceptable to the State Electrical Board.
    *A minimum of seven hundred contact hours shall be the equivalent of one year of instruction.
    *One year of work experience credit may be given for qualified electrical experience gained in military service.

Master Electrical RequirementsElectrical Contractor

Applicants must meet these pre-qualifications prior to sitting for the Contractor Exam:

  • Be a graduate of a four-year electrical engineering course in an accredited college or university and have at least one year experience, acceptable to the board, as a journeyman electrician;
    OR
  • Have at least one year experience, acceptable to the board, as a licensed Journeyman Electrician;
    OR
  • Have at least five years experience, acceptable to the board, in planning for, laying out, supervising, and installing wiring, apparatus, or equipment for electrical light, heat, and power

How do I obtain a license?

To apply for your license, contact the Nebraska State Electrical Board at 402-471-3550 or visit their website.

12 Hours of continuing education are required for each renewal. Also, Journeyman Electricians have reciprocity agreements with Alaska, Arkansas, Colorado, Idaho, Iowa, Minnesota, Montana, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Utah, Texas, and Wyoming, while Electrical Contractors only with Minnesota and South Dakota.
