A licensed Class A Journeyworker Electrician is licensed to perform and supervise any electrical work except for planning or laying out of electrical work.
A licensed Class B Journeyworker Electrician may install, alter, repair, and supervise the installing, altering, or repairing of electrical wiring, apparatus, and equipment for single phase systems of not more than 200 ampere capacity for light, heat, power, and other purposes on any farm or in any single family dwelling located in any town or municipality which has a population of less than 2,500 inhabitants.
A Master Electrician in Minnesota is able to perform and supervise any electrical work.
A Master Electrician in Minnesota can engage in the planning, superintending and the practical installation of Electrical, to contract for Electrical and installations and to conduct the business of Electrical. The individual may perform Electrical statewide, for both interior Electrical and exterior water service, sanitary sewer and storm sewer systems within the property lines.
A Electrical Contractor is someone who performs or offers to perform any electrical work, with or without compensation. A contractor's license does not of itself qualify its holder to perform or supervise the electrical work authorized by holding any class of electrician's or other personal license.

The state requires 16 hours of continuing education prior to each renewal. Minnesota has agreements at the journeyworker electrician level with the following states: Alaska, Arkansas, Colorado, Iowa, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wyoming. In addition, Minnesota, Iowa, North Dakota, Nebraska, and South Dakota have reciprocal agreements at the master electrician license level.

The Board will notify the applicant once they have been approved to take the examination. The applicant will apply to sit for the exam on the state board website. Testing centers are setup throughout the State in larger cities. Pre-approval is required from the state prior to scheduling the exam.

The Minnesota exams are open book, and based on the 2020 NEC.
