  • Building Inspector

    Building Inspectors are responsible for conducting inspections of buildings at various stages of construction, renovation, or alteration to ensure compliance with the Michigan Building Code and applicable regulations. They assess structural integrity, fire safety measures, accessibility features, electrical and plumbing systems, and other components to verify compliance with building standards.

  • Building Plan Reviewer

    Building Plan Reviewers are responsible for reviewing and evaluating building plans and specifications to ensure compliance with the Michigan Building Code and relevant regulations. They meticulously examine architectural designs, structural plans, fire protection systems, mechanical and electrical layouts, and other aspects of building plans.

What are the requirements to getting this registration?

  • A residential builder's license issued by this state and 6 years of experience immediately preceding application in any 1 or more of the following professions:
    1. a contractor in general building construction as a contractor
    2. a skilled trades worker
    3. an individual who was in charge of structural construction

    OR


  • Registration as a building inspector from other states or foreign countries with inspector experience in building construction. Must provide requirements for registration prior to approval from the department.

  • OR


  • Seven years of experience in general building construction in any 1 or more of the following professions:
    1. a building contractor
    2. a person in charge of general building construction
    3. a project manager, superintendent, supervisor or foreman actively engaged in general building construction immediately preceding submission of application
    4. a skilled worker in structural carpentry, structural masonry, structural steel erection, or structural concrete construction who has been actively engaged in the general building construction field immediately preceding application
    5. a current license as an architect or engineer under article 20 of the occupational code

  • A residential builder's license issued by this state and 6 years of experience immediately preceding application in any 1 or more of the following professions:
    1. general building construction as a contractor
    2. skilled trades worker
    3. a person in charge of structural construction

  • Registration as a building plan reviewer from another state or foreign country with plan reviewer experience in building construction. Must provide requirements of registration before receiving approval from the department.

  • OR


  • Seven years experience in general building construction in 1 or more of the following professions:
    1. Contractor
    2. A skilled trades worker
    3. An individual who was a person in charge of structural construction
    • In addition, you must also possess 2 years of experience as a journey level, structural, construction or skilled trades worker including as a carpenter, brick layer or mason, or a steel worker.

How do I obtain a building official registration?

To apply for your inspector or plan reviewer registration, contact the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs at 517-241-0199 or visit their website.

Both inspectors and plan reviewers are required to complete state approved continuing education to renew their registration. Inspectors are required to complete a total of 34 hours of CE. Plan reviewers are required to complete a total of 40 hours of CE. Michigan has limited reciprocity arrangements, check with the board for the most up-to-date information.

APPLY FOR YOUR REGISTRATION

Before you may sit for the exam, you must first submit your application for examination. Be sure to include copies of your current licenses and certifications.

PASS THE STATE EXAM

After studying with RocketCert, you will be on your way to passing the required State exam. Exams are administered by PSI Exams. Testing centers are setup throughout the State in larger cities. Application for Examination must be approved prior to scheduling the exam.

WAIT FOR YOUR REGISTRATION

After completing all the steps above, PSI will notify the Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs. They will mail your Building Inspector or Plan Reviewer Registration to you.

These exams are administered by PSI Exams. You must submit an application for examination in order to sit for the exam.

How do I pass the exam?

The exam prep includes math, geometry, highlighting guides covering the topics your exam is based on, practice questions for each references, and unlimited attempts on our "test simulation".
