Journeyman HVAC Mechanic
A Journeyman HVAC Mechanic in Kentucky works physically on site. They personally observe and are responsible for each apprentice assigned to the journeyman in carrying out the installation, alteration, and repair of HVAC systems. A Journeyman operates under the general direction and supervision of the Master HVAC Contractor.

Master HVAC Contractor
A Master HVAC Contractor in Kentucky is able to practice heating, ventilation, and air conditioning contracting, including the obtaining of any necessary permits in connection with the practice of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning contracting, and shall be primarily responsible for the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning work performed.
What are the requirements to getting a license?
Journeyman HVAC Mechanic- Pass the Kentucky Journeyman HVAC Mechanic Exam
- Submit verifiable proof of one of the following:
- 2 years experience working under a licensed Master HVAC Contractor in Kentucky. OR
- 4 years of experience working in HVAC outside of Kentucky.
Master HVAC Contractor- Pass the Kentucky Master HVAC Exam
- Obtain general liability insurance policy of $500,000 and property damage not less than $300,000.
- Submit verifiable proof of one of the following:
- 2 years experience working under a licensed Master HVAC Contractor as a licensed Journeyman HVAC Mechanic in Kentucky. OR
- 5 years of experience working in HVAC outside of Kentucky as a Master HVAC Contractor or equivalent.
How do I obtain a license?
To apply for your license, contact the Kentucky Department of Housing, Buildings, and Construction at 502-573-0365 or visit dhbc.ky.gov.
HVAC licenses in Kentucky expire yearly on the last day of your birthday month. To renew, you must complete 6 hours of approved continuing education prior to the expiration date. Kentucky has no reciprocity agreements.

Prior to submitting the application, obtain insurance policies and all required experience, education, and legal documentation.
After passing the exam and completing all the steps above, it will be time to apply through the DHCB to obtain your Kentucky HVAC License. Licensees must provide proof of insurance at this time. Exams can be scheduled through either ProV or Pearson VUE. We recommend taking the exam through ProV.
