What type of work can be done with the Florida Electrical Contractor license?

  • Electrical Contractor

    Electrical Contractors are licensed to install, repair, alter, add to, or design electrical wiring, fixtures, appliances, apparatus, raceways, and conduit, including the electrical installations and systems within plants and substations and ALL alarm systems and specialty categories.

  • Residential Electrical Contractor

    The scope of certification includes installation, repair, alteration, addition to, replacement of or design of electrical wiring, fixtures, appliances, apparatus, raceways, conduit, or any part thereof, in a 1, 2, 3, or 4 family residence not exceeding 2 stories in height, and accessory use structures in connection with the residence. The electrical service installed or worked upon is limited to single phase, 400 ampere single service

  • Pass the Business and Finance Exam
  • Pass Electrical trade exam

Financial Requirements

  • Provide a personal credit report and a personal financial statement demonstrating a positive net worth.
  • Certification of Insurance Coverage
  • Provide a Business Credit Report and Business Financial Statement showing a net worth of at least $10,000.

Electrical Contractor Requirements Education/Experience Requirements

Applicants must meet ONE of the following criteria to be eligible for an Electrical Contractors License

  • Be a licensed electrical engineer for 3 of the last 12 years; or
  • Have management experience in the trade for at least 3 years of the last 6 years; or
  • Have at least 4 years of experience as a foreman, supervisor or contractor in the trade in the last 8 years; or
  • Have at least 6 years of comprehensive training, technical education or broad experience associated with electrical contracting within the last 12 years; or
  • Have at least 6 years of technical experience in electrical work with the Armed Forces or government entity within the last 12 years; or
  • Have a combination of these qualifications totaling 6 years of experience.

In addition, the candidate for certified electrical contractor must include at least 40% of work that is in 3-phase services.

How do I obtain an electrical license in Florida?

To apply for your license, contact the Florida DBPR at 850-487-1395 or visit the Contractor's Board Website.

14 hours of continuing education are required each renewal. Florida may have reciprocity agreements for this license. Contact the licensing board you are applying to see if they have reciprocity agreements for the license you currently hold.

All applicants must pass the Business & Finance exam, buy you may choose between two electrical exam options:

Take the state-specific exam (either Residential or unlimited) OR the NASCLA Accredited Electrical Exam

How do I pass the Florida electrical contractor license exam?

The Florida exams are open book. The references below are permitted to be tabbed, highlighted, and used during your test! Unfortunately, our online course is NOT permitted to be accessed during the State exam.
