Certified Heating and Air Conditioning Contractor
The state of Alabama allows licensees to engage in the business of heating and air conditioning contracting and installation or service and repair. HACR services include the design, installation, construction, maintenance, service, repair, alteration, or modification of a product or of equipment including gas piping in heating and air conditioning, refrigeration, ventilation, or process cooling or heating systems.

Certified Refrigeration Contractor
Similarly, Alabama qualifies Refrigeration licensees to engage in the business of refrigeration contracting and servicing, installation, and repair. - Refrigeration services include but are not limited to commercial refrigeration design, installation, construction, maintenance, service, repair, alteration, or modification of a product or of equipment including walk in coolers, reach in coolers, commercial refrigerators and freezers, etc.
What are the requirements to getting a license?
Legal- Submit a complete, signed, and notarized application form
- Included with the application must be any supporting documents referenced or required by the application
Education / Experience- Hold an apprentice registration, issued by the Board, for two or more calendar years
OR - Have completed 3,000 hours of coursework or experience, as defined by the Board
OR - Have graduated an approved heating, air conditioning, or refrigeration curriculum.
Exams- Upon receiving approval to sit for the exam, applicants must pass either the Alabama HVAC or Refrigeration exam, depending on which license they are applying for.
- Both exams are open book
How do I obtain a license?
To apply for your license, contact the Alabama HACR at 334-242-5550 or visit Board Website.
4 hours of continuing education are required for each renewal. Also, Alabama has reciprocity agreements with Kentucky, Maryland, and North Carolina* - Contractor only.

How do I pass the exam?
The Alabama exams are open book. The references below are permitted to be tabbed, highlighted, and used during your test! Unfortunately, our online course is NOT permitted to be accessed during the State exam.
