What type of work can be done with the Alabama electrical license?

  • Electrical Contractor License

    The state qualifies an Electrical Contractor as any person, firm, or corporation who is engaged in the business of soliciting and installing electrical power or control systems; maintaining, altering, or repairing electrical power or control systems, any electrical wiring devices, equipment, or any other electrical apparatus.

  • Journeyman Electrical License

    A Journeyman Electrician is considered one who possesses the necessary qualifications, training, and technical knowledge to install electrical wiring, apparatus, or equipment lighting, heating, or power or control and is capable of doing the work according to plans and specifications provided and in accordance with standard rules and regulations under a master or state certified electrical contractor.

What are the requirements to getting an Alabama electrical license?

  • Submit the signed and notarized application for approval to site for the exam
  • According to the state, "Persons applying for a statewide electrical contractor examination must demonstrate a minimum of 8,000 hours’ experience that shows that you have designed, planned, laid-out and directly supervised electrical construction activities and the installing of electrical components."
  • Applicant may substitute one year of education in electrical curriculum for one-half year electrical experience for a maximum of 2,000 hours of the required 8,000 hours of experience. The applicant must submit a copy of the diploma, certificate, or transcript.
  • Applicant must obtain a passing score on the Alabama Electrical Contractor Examination

  • Must demonstrate a minimum of 8,000 hours’ experience that shows that you have necessary qualifications, training, and technical knowledge to install electrical wiring, apparatus or equipment, light, heat, or power.
  • A substantial amount of work performed must be in commercial, industrial, or residential
  • Electrical examination may substitute one year of education in an approved electrical curriculum or apprenticeship program for 1,000 hours of electrical experience for a maximum of 2,000 hours of the required 8,000 hours. Applicant must provide appropriate documentation of education or apprenticeship program and is subject to board approval
  • Passing score on the Electrical Journeyman Examination

How do I obtain an electrical license in Alabama?

14 Hours of continuing education are required for each renewal. Also, Alabama has reciprocity agreements with Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia.

Which electrical license exam do I need to take in Alabama?

All Alabama Electrical Exams are administered by ProV. Applicants are permitted to take either the ProV exam or the NASCLA exam. To schedule your exam, please visit ProV's website. Applicants must take either the Journeyman or Contractor level electrical exam.
