Florida requires both barbers and cosmetology professionals to complete state-approved HIV/AIDS training before they can be licensed. These initial courses protect clients and professionals by focusing on sanitation, safe work practices, and up-to-date information about HIV transmissions, prevention, and health regulations.

Why Florida Requires Initial HIV/AIDS Training

Barbers and cosmetology professionals work in close contact with clients, so Florida has made infection control a core part of licensing requirements. Initial HIV/AIDS training helps reduce the risk of bloodborne exposure and cross-contamination, ensuring safe practices in barbershops and salons across the state.

The Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation oversees the Board of Barbers and the Board of Cosmetology. Each board requires an initial HIV/AIDS course for new applicants, with at least two hours for barbers and four hours for cosmetologists, before they can get their state licenses.

Florida Barber Initial 2-Hour HIV/AIDS Course

To qualify for a Florida barber license, you must complete a board-approved initial HIV/AIDS course of at least two hours. You must take this training within two years before submitting your application, and you cannot substitute a similar cosmetology course for the barber-specific requirement.

Course content focuses on details such as how HIV is transmitted, how to protect yourself and your clients, and what to do in case of cuts. The course thoroughly reviews sanitation rules for tools, workstations, and linens, along with relevant Florida regulations for barbers.

Florida Cosmetology Initial 4-Hour HIV/AIDS Course

Florida cosmetology licenses and related areas, such as nail specialists, facial specialists, and full specialists, require an initial HIV/AIDS course of at least four hours. You must complete a course through a Board of Cosmetology-approved provider within two years before applying for your license.

Cosmetology carries a risk of accidental exposure to blood due to close proximity during facials, waxing, manicures, and other beauty treatments. During the four-hour HIV/AIDS course, you’ll learn how to mitigate these risks and practice effective infection-control while working in salons or spas.

How HIV/AIDS Training Fits Into Your Florida Licensing

Your initial HIV/AIDS training is just one step within the overall Florida barber licensing process. You must also complete the required in-school training hours. Applicants submit their application to the Department of Business and Professional Regulation and must then pass the state barber exam before they can practice independently.

Cosmetology licenses require set school hour totals depending on the specific license type. From there, you must successfully pass the Florida cosmetology exam to ensure adequate understanding of technical skills and health standards.

Separate from initial HIV/AIDS training, there are also renewal requirements. Barbers must complete a two-hour HIV/AIDS course for each renewal cycle. Cosmetology licenses mandate a minimum of one hour of HIV/AIDS focused content in their overall continuing education requirements.
