If you’re interested in getting your residential contractor license in Arkansas, it’s important that you understand the requirements for obtaining this important credential. Professionals in the state must pass certain tests and submit proof of work experience, among other things, as part of the application process.

A residential building license is required in order for a contractor to legally build or work on single-family residences if the cost of the project is $2,000 or greater. This includes labor and material.

However, there are some exceptions that can apply. residential contractor license also permits the holder to remodel and/or repair single-family residences.

Requirements for Obtaining an Arkansas Residential Building Contractor License

Before a license of this type can be granted to a contractor, there are certain obligations that must first be met. Professionals must contact the Arkansas Contractors Licensing Board to apply for the license.

As part of the application that is submitted to the board, professionals will need to submit proof of experience. This experience must equate to four years of verifiable, documented, and appropriate work experience in the industry. This experience can be residential or commercial.

In addition, applicants must also provide three verifiable references as part of their application submission. They must comply with any and all other regulations and laws set by the state that are reasonably associated with the profession of residential building.

Finally, applicants must obtain pre-approval to take the Residential Building Contractor Exam and pass the test before a license will be granted.

Getting Your Arkansas Residential Building Contractor License

It’s important to note that there are no requirements regarding continuing education for acquiring or renewing your license. It’s also good for professionals to know that Arkansas has reciprocity agreements with some other states. These include:

• Tennessee
• Alabama
• Mississippi
• Louisiana

This reciprocity is valid as long as the professional has held the particular license for at least three years.

To pass the Residential Contractor Builder License Exam, you will need to make sure you sign up with an online course provider that is approved by the state of Arkansas. You will also need to take the Business and Law Exam as well.

The Residential Building Contractor Exam has 30 questions on it, and you must get 70% of the questions right in order to pass. You will have one hour and 15 minutes to complete the test, and it is an open-book exam.

The Business and Law Exam has 50 questions on it, and again, you must get at least 70% of them correct in order to pass. You have 140 minutes allotted to finish the test, and it is open-book as well.

Topics covered on these tests include project management and lien law, footings and foundations, business organization, general carpentry, tax laws, estimating and plan reading, risk management, OSHA safety, and many others.
