If you are a registered and licensed general contractor in the state of Florida, you should already be aware that your license is only valid for two years. Certified general contractor licenses expire on August 31 of each even year, and registered GC licenses expire on that date during the odd years.

In order to renew your Florida contractor license, you are required to complete 14 hours of continuing education (CE) courses and submit proof of your completion and renewal to the state. Keep in mind that these 14 hours are required every two years for each license renewal.

You should also know that only courses that are state approved will be accepted by the state board as valid training for renewal. If you choose an online program for your training courses, make sure that all courses are approved by the state.

Florida General Contractor Continuing Education Requirements

The Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation is responsible for setting the specific requirements that must be met for continuing education courses. The state also sets the number of hours required and the topics of study.

If you work in Miami Dade County, it’s important to note that the county requires all licensees to complete one hour of continuing education training that pertains to Chapter 10 of the Miami Dade Code, as well as one hour on Florida Statute 713, Construction Lien Law. This is in addition to the core 14 hours of CE that are required.

The 14 hours of CE courses (16 in Miami Dade) include topics such as:

  • Wind mitigation
  • Workers’ compensation
  • Florida laws and rules
  • General topics
  • Advanced modules
  • Florida business practices
  • Workplace safety

Be sure to add Code of Miami Dade County and Florida Statute 713, Construction Lien Law to your requirements if you work in Miami Dade County.

How to Access State-Approved CE Courses Online for Contractors

There are many programs available online that offer CE courses for contractors, but not all of them are approved by the state. Make sure any program you choose for your license renewal is Florida-approved!

The best online programs will have the 14 (or 16) CE hours you need available in a tidy bundle that you can purchase for one price. Choose a program that offers additional perks and benefits like the ability to complete coursework at your own pace, live customer service, and access to course materials at any time from anywhere.

Once you complete your CE hours for license renewal, you can instantly print or save a certificate of completion. If you're taking an online CE course with RocketCert, your completion will be submitted to the state the following business day.
