Professional tradesmen in the state of Virginia are required to obtain a license before any work or bidding can take place, and gas fitters are no exception. There are three different types of gas fitting licenses that the state recognizes, so you will need to first determine which type is right for you.

Three Types of Gas Fitting Licenses

The three types of Virginia gas fitting licenses are:

  • Journeyman Gas Fitting License
  • Master Gas Fitting License
  • Contractor License

All three licenses are used in combination with a valid Virginia contractor license that is Class A, B, or C.

Virginia Journeyman Gas Fitting License

This type of professional license is appropriate for professionals who install, maintain, and repair specific types of equipment and materials in the field. It should be noted that a Journeyman gas fitter must operate only under the supervision of a professional who holds a Master gas fitter license.

Master Gas Fitting License in Virginia

A professional who holds a Master gas fitting license has all of the qualifications and abilities of a Journeyman gas fitter. However, they also are able to plan, lay out details, and supervise Journeyman gas fitters as well. Master gas fitters are legally qualified to work independently with no additional professional supervision.

Virginia Contractor’s Licenses

It’s important to understand that a gas fitting contractor license is used in combination with a Virginia contractor’s license. This allows qualified professionals to bid on and complete various jobs within the state. In order to bid on projects over $1,000, a contractor’s license is required.

Requirements for a Virginia Gas Fitter License

There are different requirements for the different types of licenses in the state, so make sure you understand what each requires. Check out our pages for more Virginia trade information.

Requirements for a Journeyman Gas Fitter

You must receive pre-approval in order to schedule and take the Journeyman Gas Fitting exam. In addition, you are required to complete a two-year program from a state-approved technical school, trade school, or community college.

Alternatively, those seeking a Journeyman license may have four years of verifiable experience and 240 hours of educational or vocational training. Other alternative qualifications include:

A final alternative that meets the criteria includes 80 hours of educational or vocational training and six years of verifiable work experience.
