Electricians in North Dakota must obtain a license to practice from the North Dakota State Electrical Board (NDSEB). What licenses are available and what are the requirements to get them? 

Class B Electrician License 

A Class B license permits you to wire, install, and repair electrical equipment and apparatus under the supervision of a licensed electrician, specifically for farmsteads and one- and two-family dwellings. What are the requirements to obtain this license? 

You must first complete 3,000 hours of experience in farmstead or residential wiring under the supervision of a licensed master or Class B electrician. You can substitute two years of electrical school for 1,000 hours. 

Next, you must pass the Class B Electrical Exam. Topics covered on this exam include: 

• Fundamental electricity 
• Laws 
• Rules 
• Wiring standards of North Dakota 
• National Electrical Code 

This test consists of a closed-book portion that you’ll have one hour to complete and an open-book portion that you must complete in 3.5 hours. You must answer at least 70% of the questions correctly to pass. 

Journeyman Electrician License 

A journeyman electrician wires, installs, and repairs electrical equipment and apparatus for residential and commercial properties under the supervision of a master electrician or master of record. This license requires the completion of 8,000 hours of work experience over no fewer than three years, with the option to substitute two years of schooling for 2,000 hours of experience. 

You must also pass the Journeyman Electrical Exam, which covers the same basic topics as the Class B Electrical Exam. This test also has a one-hour closed-book portion and a 3.5-hour open-book portion. You must answer a minimum of 70% of questions correctly to pass. 

Master Electrician License 

In addition to wiring, installing, and repairing electrical systems, a master electrician can plan and lay out projects and supervise other electricians. Before becoming a master electrician, you must obtain a journeyman electrician license and complete at least 2,000 hours of experience as a licensed journeyman under the supervision of a master electrician or master of record. 

You must also pass the Master Electrician Exam, which covers the same topics found on the Class B and Journeyman Electrical Exams. Again, you will have one hour to complete the closed-book section and 3.5 hours to complete the open-book section, with a score of at least 70% required to pass.
