A contracting power limited electrician is a professional who carries liability insurance and is permitted to pull permits and practice independently. A non-contracting license, on the other hand, only allows the holder to conduct work under the supervision of a contracting master, a master of record, a contracting power limited electrician, or a limited electrician of record. 

A power limited electrician of record works only for a specific organization, such as a partnership, company, corporation, LLC, or association. This professional may only work on properties owned by the organization. 

How to Obtain a Power Limited Electrician License 

There are a few requirements you must meet before you can obtain a power limited electrician license in North Dakota. First, you must register as an apprentice power limited electrician so you can learn and operate under the supervision of a contracting master, a master of record, a contracting power limited, or a power limited electrician of record. 

From there you must work for a minimum of 2.5 years and complete 6,000 hours of qualifying work experience. Once you have completed these requirements and applied, you must pass a state trade exam. The Power Limited Electrician Exam is an open-book test covering topics like: 

• Fundamental electricity 
• Laws 
• Rules 
• Wiring standards of North Dakota 
• National Electrical Code 

You will have 4.5 hours to complete this exam, and you must get a score of 70% or higher to pass.
