However, advancing in your career means getting the right license. Before you can legally bid for and accept contracts, you will need to obtain a suitable license from the Louisiana State Licensing Board for Contractors. What types of jobs can you take when you hold an electrical contractor license, and how can you obtain one? 

Job Prospects for an Electrical Contractor 

With an electrical contractor license in Louisiana, you are permitted to bid and accept contracts for projects like constructing, installing, altering, repairing, improving, moving, and demolishing electrical systems, equipment, and components.  

You can also supervise and oversee such contracts, including projects that involve wiring, fixtures, or appliances that supply electricity for residential, commercial, or other properties. With this license, you can accept contracts exceeding $10,000. 

How to Become an Electrical Contractor in Louisiana 

Before you can obtain an electrical contractor license, you will have to meet certain criteria. First, you need a current financial statement that shows you have a minimum net worth of $10,000. 

You must submit your application, including this statement, to receive pre-authorization to sit for a licensing exam. But before you take your exam, you will complete an online business and law course covering topics like: 

• Contractor licensing law 
• Bidding and estimating 
• Contract management 
• Financial management 
• Jobsite safety 
• Tax basics 

There is no time limit to complete this course, and you do not have to take an official exam once you finish it.  

After the business and law course, you can choose from one of two state-approved licensure exams: the Louisiana Electrical Contractor Exam or the NASCLA Electrical Exam. 

Electrical Contractor Exam 

The Electrical Contractor Exam is a state-issued trade exam featuring 80 questions about topics like: 

• Project requirements 
• Electrical calculations 
• Grounding and bonding 
• Diagrams and schematics 
• Temporary service and temporary power 
• Electrical systems 
• Class 1, 2, and 3 wiring systems 
• Systems to prevent the spread of flame or smoke 
• Systems safety requirements 
• Safe working conditions 

You will have four hours to complete this open-book exam. You get at least 70% of the questions right to pass. 

NASCLA Electrical Exam 

Fifteen states, including Louisiana, accept exams accredited by NASCLA in lieu of a state exam, making it a good choice If you plan to operate as an electrician in more than one state.  

The exam consists of 100 questions covering topics like: 

• Project design and management 
• Safety 
• Electrical theory and principles 
• General code requirements 
• Wiring and protection 
• Wiring methods and materials 
• Equipment for general use 
• Special occupations, special equipment, and special conditions 
• Communication systems 

You will have 270 minutes to complete this open-book test, and you must answer a minimum of 75 questions correctly to pass.
