A Mississippi plumbing license is fairly broad and allows you to do a large scope of plumbing work. If you’re looking to advance your plumbing career or switch career tracks, this license might be for you.

Before you can take the Mississippi Plumbing Exam, you have to fulfill certain requirements. Here’s what you need to know to get licensed.

Scope of Work: What Can You Do With a Plumbing License in Mississippi?

Licensed plumbers in Mississippi are qualified to perform “unlimited” plumbing work, including on both residential and commercial systems. However, this license does not apply to boiler or fuel gas systems, which are not included in a licensed plumber’s scope of work and require a separate license in Mississippi.

Your job flexibility and earning potential with a Mississippi plumbing license are pretty broad. You can work in schools, corporate buildings, residences, retail stores, and other structures with this license.

What You Need to Get Licensed

Mississippi requires the following from licensed plumbers:

  • Meeting pre-exam requirements
  • Getting pre-exam approval
  • Passing the Mississippi Law and Business Management Exam
  • Passing the Plumbing Exam
  • Applying for licensure

Once all of these steps are complete, you’ll be on your way to working as a licensed plumber!

Pre-Exam Requirements

The state must approve you to sit for the Plumbing Exam, so it’s best to review these steps now.

Exam applicants must:

  • Provide three letters of reference (one must be from a financial institution or bank)
  • List all projects from the last three years (including those not completed)
  • Provide proof of current liability insurance coverage (the Mississippi State Board of Contractors must be listed as the certificate holder)
  • Provide proof of workers’ compensation insurance if your business has five or more employees
  • Provide proof of good standing with the Secretary of State if you are applying as an LLP, an LLC, or another corporation

It’s best practice to request reference letters from people or businesses that you’ve worked in collaboration with or for in the recent past.

Plumbing License Exams

Once you’ve been approved, you can sit for the two required exams.

Law and Business Management

The Law and Business Management Exam lasts for two hours and contains 50 questions. You must get 35 out of 50 questions correct to pass. This is an open-book test.

Question topics include:

  • Lien law
  • Labor laws
  • Estimating and bidding
  • Licensing
  • Contracts
  • Risk management
  • Business organization

This exam is designed to test your knowledge of relevant Mississippi laws and regulations that you’ll encounter as a plumber.

Plumbing

The Plumbing Exam lasts for three hours and contains 70 questions. You must get at least 49 questions correct to pass the exam. This is also an open-book test, so you can reference certain materials during the exam.

Question topics include:

  • General plumbing regulations
  • Isometric analysis
  • Traps and interceptors
  • Joints and connections
  • Safety
  • Cleanouts
  • Fixtures and equipment

You’ll likely draw on your prior work in the trade for reference throughout the exam.
