As a licensed remodeler in Mississippi, you can alter and transform buildings into structures with beautiful architecture and updated interiors. This career goal requires one thing: a Mississippi remodelers license.  

The type of license you need will depend on the projects you wish to work on. Learn more about both licenses: the standard Mississippi remodelers license and the residential version.  

The Difference Between Remodelers Licenses in Mississippi 

A general Mississippi remodelers license is a type of building construction license that allows you to remodel any structure in Maine, whether commercial or residential. “Remodeling” refers to things like roofing work, repairs, and structural changes to a building.  

A residential remodelers license grants you these same permissions, but they only apply to residential structures. This means you can work on dwellings like townhomes, single-family houses, and condos. 

Pre-Exam Application Requirements  

Before you can sit for the two required exams that will grant you your license, you need to apply. Your application must be sent to the state board and contain these documents:  

• Three letters of reference (one must come from a financial institution or bank)  
• Proof of at least three remodeling jobs you’ve completed  
• Proof of valid liability insurance  
• Proof of workers’ compensation insurance (if you have five or more employees) 
• Proof of good standing with the Mississippi Secretary of State (only if you’re applying as a corporation, LLP, or LLC) 

Once your application has been approved, you can take your exams.  

Take the Required Remodeling Exams  

Both residential and general remodeler applicants must pass two exams. The first is the Mississippi Law and Business Management Exam. The second is either the Remodeling Exam or the Residential Remodeler Exam, depending on the license you’re applying for.  

Law and Business Management Exam 

This exam has 50 questions and takes two hours to complete. It has an open-book format, so you can reference your study materials during the test.  

Topics include: 

• Estimating and bidding 
• Financial management 
• Lien law 
• Labor laws 
• Risk management 
• Environmental safety 

You must get 35 out of 50 questions correct to pass the exam.  

Remodeling Exam 

The Remodeling Exam has 60 questions and takes 2 hours and 15 minutes to complete. 

Topics include: 

• Residential and commercial roofing 
• Rough carpentry 
• Safety 
• Windows and doors 
• Masonry  

The test is open-book and requires a score of 70% or higher to pass.  

Residential Remodeler Exam 

The Mississippi exam for residential remodelers has 50 questions. It also requires a score of at least 70% to pass. The exam runs for 2.5 hours and is proctored in an open-book format.  

The topics are similar to the Remodeling Exam but exclude any mention of commercial projects. You’ll still need to learn about safety, windows and doors, and other important aspects of remodeling. Test prep focuses more heavily on residential structures and considerations.
