Each Maine electrical license comes with certain requirements for education, work experience, and exam scores. Here’s everything you need to know to become a licensed journeyman or master electrician in Maine.
A journeyman electrical license permits you to work as an electrician under a master electrician. This usually means you’re an employee of a licensed business, performing electrical installations under supervision.
To become a licensed journeyman, you must have at least two years and 4,000 hours of work experience doing electrical installations as a licensed trainee electrician. This means you worked under a master electrician who provided you with direct supervision and guidance.
You must also have worked for at least 2,000 hours as a licensed journeyman-in-training. This work must have been done under a master electrician and completed within four years of getting your journeyman-in-training license.
Finally, you must pass the Journeyman Electrician Exam. You need state approval to be able to sit for this exam, so be prepared to submit an application ahead of time.
