Journeyman/Master Electrical Licensing & Exam Prep
Electrical licenses can be obtained in either Journeyman or Master classifications. Both licenses require applicants to pass an examination, and the licenses are governed by the State Electrical Board of Maine. Qualifications to obtain and renew the licenses are detailed below.

Journeyman Electrical License
A Journeyman Electrician licensed through the State of Maine Department of Professional & Financial Regulation Office of Professional & Occupational Regulation, is qualified to make electrical installations in the employment of a Master Electrician, Limited Electrician or Electrical Company.

Master Electrical License
Master Electricians are permitted to to engage in the business of installing Electrical or Electrical systems.
What are the requirements to getting a license?
Journeyman Electrical Requirements- Have at least two years with 4,000 hours of work in the field of Electrical installations as a licensed trainee plumber under the supervision of a licensed Master Plumber
- Have a minimum of 2,000 hours of work in the field of Electrical installations as a licensed Journeyman-in-training under the supervision of a licensed Master Plumber, as long as the work experience is obtained within four years of the date upon which the applicant was issued a Journeyman-in-training license.
- Pass the Journeyman Electrical exam
Master Electrical Requirements- At least one year with 2,000 hours of work in the field of Electrical installations as a licensed Journeyman Electrician;
- Have four years with 8,000 hours of work in the field of Electrical installations as a licensed trainee plumber under the supervision of a licensed Master Electrician.
- Pass the Master Electrical exam
How do I obtain a license?
To apply for your license, contact the Office of Professional & Occupational Regulation at 225-756-3434 or visit their website.
The state requires up to 5 hours of continuing education prior to renewal.The State of Maine presently has reciprocity agreements with New Hampshire and Vermont..

Approval is required to sit for the exam, you must apply through the State of Maine Electrician’s Examining Board. This application can be submitted online. Once you are approved, you can take the exam on Prov’s website.

How do I pass the exam?
Maine allows applicants to use the National Electrical Code during the exam. Our exam prep includes math, highlighting guides, study guides, covering the topics your exam is based on, practice questions for each references, and unlimited attempts on our "test simulation".
