There are several different levels of plumbing licenses available to Vermont residents, but no matter what level you’re aiming for, the most important part of the application is quality exam preparation.

If you’re ready to advance your career as a Vermont plumber, you’re in the right place. Here’s what you can expect when applying for the appropriate Vermont plumbing license for your experience level.

Three License Options: Which One to Choose for Your Career

The three Vermont licenses for plumbers are the heating system specialist license, the journeyman plumber license, and the master plumber license.

Heating system specialist licensure allows you to install, repair, and replace hydronic heating systems. If you want to work with boilers and radiators, this specialist license is for you.

A licensed journeyman plumber can install plumbing, water treatment, and specialty heating systems under a master plumber’s direction. This is an intermediate license that allows you to supervise a plumbing apprentice as long as you are both under the supervision of someone with a master plumber license.

Finally, a master plumber license qualifies you to oversee all aspects of a less-qualified plumber’s work. This license is ideal for an aspiring business owner who wants to hire subcontractors or employees to take on big projects.

Pre-Exam Requirements for Each License

Getting any of these three licenses requires passing the Plumbing Theory and Plumber Practical exams. Beyond this, you’ll need documentation of your work experience.

Heating System Specialist Requirements

This specialist license requires passing scores on both plumbing exams. You also need to meet one of the following sets of requirements.

Option 1: Registration as an apprentice with the Vermont State Apprenticeship Council; documentation of 2,000 hours of experience, certified by the Vermont Department of Labor.

Option 2: Current licensure outside of Vermont for one year at a level equal to a Vermont journeyman.

Journeyman Plumber Requirements

You’ll need to pass both plumbing exams to get this license. You’ll also need to provide proof of one of the following:

Option 1: A certificate of completion from the Vermont State Apprenticeship Council.

Option 2: A certified statement of licensure or completed apprenticeship from a different state approved by the board.

Option 3: 4,000 hours of successful job training, certified by affidavits from a P1 or P2 licensed specialist or a licensed master plumber; 144 or more formal instruction hours, which is equivalent to one year of schooling.

Master Plumber Requirements

Applicants who wish to obtain master plumber licensure must pass both plumbing exams. They must also be able to show one of the following:

Option 1: Vermont journeyman licensure of at least 12 months.

Option 2: Current one-year licensure outside of the state at a level equal to a Vermont journeyman.

Option 3: Any instruction or training of at least 14,000 hours that is board-approved.
