What You Can Do With an Ohio Refrigeration License 

Why do you need an Ohio refrigeration license? This license will give you more autonomy and freedom as a contractor. With it, you can: 

• Install refrigerators and refrigeration systems 
• Repair refrigeration systems  
• Perform refrigerator maintenance 
• Alter refrigeration systems  
• Work on refrigeration systems of any horsepower and weight 

An Ohio refrigeration license permits you to work only on refrigeration systems used to preserve food and products. This means the license doesn’t apply to cooling systems used for comfort, such as air conditioning units.  

Pre-Licensure Requirements 

Before you can take the licensure exam, the state of Ohio requires you to meet certain criteria.  

To apply for the exam, you must have worked the last five years as a tradesperson under a licensed contractor. The work you’ve performed must meet acceptable standards for the Ohio refrigeration license.  

The exception to this requirement is if you’re a registered Ohio engineer with three years of refrigeration trade experience.  

To prove this experience, you can submit the last five years of tax documents, such as your W-2s or 1040 forms.  

You must also submit one of the following with your tax documents: 

• One permit for each year you’ve worked (five total)  
• Your journeyman’s card 
• An apprenticeship completion certificate from a state or federally approved apprentice program 
• Proof of 40 hours of continuing education on refrigeration trade code  

Once you have all of the required experience and documentation, you’re ready to take the two required exams.  

Ohio Refrigeration Licensure Exams  

The state must preapprove your application before you can take the two required examinations. You’ll also be required to complete both state and federal background checks before you schedule the tests.  

The Ohio Refrigeration Contractor Exam and the Ohio Business and Law Exam are both open-book tests, which means that you can access your study materials during the exams.  

The contractor exam is three hours long, and the business and law exam is two hours long. You must get at least 70% of the questions correct on each exam to pass.  

Provide Proof of Insurance and Apply for Licensure  

If you pass the exams, you’ll need to submit proof of insurance to apply for licensure. At this time, the requirement is a $500,000 minimum of liability insurance. The insurance policy and refrigeration license must both be assigned to a contracting company per Ohio’s state licensure requirements.
