Enroll in State-Approved Continuing Education Courses to Maintain Your Electrical Inspector Registration

Every registered electrical inspector in the state of Michigan must enroll in continuing education courses to keep their license current. Plan reviewers are required to obtain 40 hours of education every three years, while electrical inspectors without this additional responsibility must take 34 hours.  

Approved continuing education hours must cover a specific set of topics over a set number of hours. This education includes: 

• 4 hours covering rules and acts 
• 16 hours covering technical topics 
• 12 hours covering specialty topics 

The state also requires all electrical inspectors to take continuing education hours covering plan review topics. Those who wish to maintain just their electrical inspector registration must take two hours of plan review courses, which add up to 34 total hours.  

Those who have opted to add a specific plan reviewer registration must take eight hours of plan review CE courses, adding up to 40 total hours of coursework. 

What to Do to Complete Your Electrical Inspector Registration Renewal?

In Michigan, all electrical inspector registration renewals must go through the Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs. Consequently, the continuing education course provider you choose needs to be approved by the state for the courses to count toward registration renewal. 

It’s always a good idea to select a provider that can verify your work with the state in the event that there are any discrepancies with your hours. If you are selected for a random audit, you'll also likely need a certificate of completion to submit as proof of completed hours. 

All registered electrical inspectors must submit an application for renewal every three years. The completed application is due no later than September 16 of the year your registration expires. This application can be submitted through the online system of the Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs.
