Michigan plumbing inspectors and plan reviewers have the important job of ensuring building integrity and safety for residents and businesses. While it definitely requires years of in-depth training and amassing a wealth of knowledge, it also provides tons of flexibility and opportunities for advancement.

To continue advancing on this professional path, the state of Michigan requires that you renew your plumbing inspector registration every few years. It’s critical to understand the steps you need to stay in compliance so you can keep your career on track.

Stay Current With High-Quality Continuing Education Courses

As with most inspector registrations in Michigan, the state’s Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs expects you to complete continuing education courses to learn about regulatory changes, discover innovative concepts in the field, and refresh your knowledge on the basics.

If you’re a plan reviewer, you must take 40 CE hours to renew your registration. Just 34 hours are required for plumbing inspectors.

Fortunately, there is no in-person requirement for continuing education, so all hours can be completed online. However, there are specific topics your CE hours must cover and a specific number of hours attached to each topic. These subjects and hours include:

  • Rules and Acts: 4 hours
  • Technical: 16 hours
  • Specialty: 12 hours
  • Plan Review: 2 hours (8 hours for registered plan reviewers)

Note that all courses do not have to be taken concurrently to count. Those with busy careers can take their continuing education hours at their own pace as long as all state renewal deadlines are met. It’s also important that you take courses with an approved provider, as these companies have met stringent requirements for high-quality materials and presentations.

Avoiding Hassles and Delays in Renewing Your Plumbing Inspector Registration

It’s important to know that all registrations are good for three years. To avoid problems with renewal, you must complete your coursework by September 16 of the year it is set to expire.

An approved course provider will be able to report your CE hour completion to the state as well as provide you with a certificate of completion. This will be crucial in the event that the state audits your registration to ensure you are qualified to continue in your career. Once your course completion details have been sent to the state licensing department, you are free to complete your registration renewal via the online portal.
