Becoming a mechanical inspector in the state of Michigan requires a lot of hard work. You must have years of experience in multiple work classifications and pass rigorous exams covering mechanical codes and safety standards.

Obtaining Continuing Education for Experienced Michigan Mechanical Inspectors

The Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs expects all mechanical inspectors to maintain knowledge of building codes and safety standards and keep up with any changes. For this reason, the licensing agency requires mechanical inspectors to complete between 34 and 40 hours of continuing education. 

The number of hours you must complete depends on whether you are registered as a mechanical inspector or you are pursuing renewal for a plan reviewer registration as well. The latter registration requires 40 hours’ worth of credits. 

Within the required hours of continuing education, both plan reviewers and mechanical inspectors must take 12 of those hours in a specialty area, which can involve anything from learning about building trades to understanding moisture control. The remaining hours must be taken in the following areas: 

• Rules and Acts: Four hours covering topics like business building, code enforcement, and regulatory changes 
• Technical: 16 hours covering topics like residential code review and building construction techniques 
• Plan Review: Two to eight hours (depending on your registration) covering topics like site development and code-related issues 

Once all hours have been completed, you are free to pursue renewal of your mechanical inspector registration with the state of Michigan. 

Steps to Renew Your Mechanical Inspector Registration

Before you can renew your registration, you must complete your coursework within the specified timeframe. Mechanical code and plan reviewer registrations are good for three years, expiring on September 16 of the third year. Your course provider will notify the state once your coursework is done. However, you should hold on to your certificate of completion so you can be prepared in the case of an audit. 

Once everything is in order, you can visit Michigan’s Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA) website to complete your registration. If you haven’t already, you will need to sign up for an online account to submit your renewal.
