No matter what type of electrician license you hold, you’ve done a lot of work to get it. In Hawaii, that means having thousands of hours of experience as well as completing hundreds of hours of rigorous coursework.

The result is a great career that affords you a lot of flexibility and an opportunity to contribute positively to the community. Once you have a rewarding career like this, you’ll want to learn how to maintain it. Learn what’s required to renew your electrical license well before it expires.

Obtaining the Continuing Education You Need for Successful License Renewal

In Hawaii, maintenance electricians are the only electrical professionals who don’t need continuing education in order to keep their licenses. For every other type of electrician, four hours of continuing education is needed for renewal purposes.

These four hours cover recent updates to the National Electrical Code. To complete continuing education, all licensees will need a copy of the NFPA 70: National Electrical Code (NEC) Handbook, 2023 Edition. This will help you fully understand the latest changes to the code and how they will apply to your professional work.

Steps to Renewing Your Electrical License in the State of Hawaii

Hawaii adheres to a triennial renewal schedule, which means all electrical licenses must be renewed on a three-year rotation with a deadline of June 30.

The only exception is for those who obtained a new license within one year of the expiration date. If you do not renew your license within a one-year grace period, you’ll need to reapply for a license and complete the required exam for first-time licensees.

The first two steps to renewal are purchasing and completing a continuing education course. You must do so with an approved provider that meets the standards set forth by the state of Hawaii. This ensures there will be no delays in obtaining your renewal.

Proof of continuing education course completion is due at the time of renewal, so it’s important to choose an educational provider that issues a certificate of completion at the end of your course. Hawaii also requires an examination to ensure you have retained the information. Once you have completed all requirements, you are free to submit your renewal application to the state.
