Having a reliable roof overhead to protect against the elements gives much-needed peace of mind. As a roofing contractor, you can help to make structures weatherproof and watertight, fulfilling an essential role in creating safe and livable homes.

Before you can get started on your career path, however, you’ll have to obtain a license from the Nevada State Contractors Board. What are the requirements to obtain a C-15A Roofing or C-15 Roofing and Siding Contractor License, and what work are you permitted to do when you have one?

Permitted Activities With a C-15 or C-15A License

Obtaining a C-15 Roofing and Siding Contractor License allows you to perform a range of duties associated with exterior surfaces. You may install/apply, alter, and repair watertight and weatherproof roofing materials. These include underlayment materials like asphalt, felt, tar, and flex, as well as shakes, shingles, tile, slate, aluminum, and other types of roofing.

These tasks may also be performed with a C-15A Roofing Contractor License. However, a professional with a C-15 license is also permitted to install, alter, and repair siding materials. This could include watertight and weatherproof underlayment materials like glass, metal, plastic, and urethane, as well as rubber, latex, asphalt, and more. It also includes outer siding materials like enameled steel, wood, plastic, aluminum, and glass.

Requirements to Obtain a License

Before you can obtain a C-15 or C-15A license, you must meet certain criteria. First, you must complete four full years of qualifying experience, which could include work as a foreman, journeyman, supervising employee, or contractor.

You’ll also have to provide a financial statement, proof of insurance (industrial and workers’ compensation), and a cash or surety bond in the amount determined by the Nevada State Contractors Board. All that remains is to pass state exams, including the Contractor Management Survey Exam and a trade exam.

The Contractor Management Survey Exam consists of 60 questions covering topics like:

  • Licensing
  • Lien law
  • Estimating and bidding
  • Financial management
  • Labor laws
  • Tax laws
  • Contracts
  • Risk management
  • Project management
  • Environmental and safety

You’ll have two hours to complete this open-book exam, and you must answer at least 45 questions (75%) correctly to pass. You’ll also take the C-15A Roofing Contractor Exam or the C-15 Roofing and Siding Contractor Exam. These open-book tests cover topics such as:

  • Safety
  • Roofing substrates
  • Steep roofing
  • Roofing repairs
  • Elastomeric roofing
  • Built-up bituminous roofing
  • Sheet metal and flashing
  • Siding
  • Photovoltaic systems

You will have two hours to complete either test. The C-15A exam features 50 questions, and you must answer a minimum of 38 questions correctly to pass. The C-15 exam has 60 questions and you must answer at least 45 correctly.
