What to Know About the Three Types of Delaware Electrician Licenses

The state of Delaware’s Board of Electrical Examiners provides a few options for those seeking to become a licensed electrician in the state. You can choose to become a Journeyperson Electrician, which requires you to perform, maintain, and troubleshoot electrical services covered by the National Electric Code (NEC) under the supervision of a Master Electrician. 

If you want to take your career a step further, you can gain the authority to supervise others by applying for a Master Electrician license. This allows you to perform all electrical services and electrical work without restriction as long as it adheres to local building and NEC codes as adopted by the Delaware Fire Prevention Commission.

Finally, a Residential Electrician can perform electrical services and work on residential buildings without direct on-site supervision. However, this license comes with a few limitations, as you can only perform electrical work to or beyond the breaker panel or fuse box prior to the building being connected to the electrical grid. 

Licensing Requirements for Each Type of Delaware Electrician

As you may expect, each type of Delaware electrician license has varying requirements that each applicant must meet before a license will be issued:

• Journeyperson Electrician: You’ll need 8,000 hours of full-time work experience under the supervision of a Master or Limited Electrician and a passing score on the Journeyperson Electrician exam
• Master Electrician: You’ll need six years of full-time work experience as a licensed Master Electrician or four years of supervised full-time experience and two years of technical training; you must also pass the Master Electrician exam and obtain $300,000 in liability insurance
• Residential Electrician: You’ll need 4,000+ hours of full-time experience or the completion of a board-approved residential apprentice program; you must also pass the Residential Electrician exam 

The Journeyperson and Master Electrician exams cover roughly the same topics. However, the first contains 80 questions, while the latter contains 100. All exams require a passing score of 75%. You must obtain permission from the Delaware Board of Electrical Examiners to sit for any exam.
