What Does a Low Voltage Contractor Do?

A low voltage contractor may take on contracts for the installation, alteration, or repair of low-voltage systems or those that don’t exceed 91 volts. This could include telephone, cable TV, CCTV, computer networking, and sound systems, as well as equipment like instrumentation, satellite dish antennas, temperature controls, and fiber optics.

Requirements for License Approval

As with many skilled trades, there are experience requirements before you apply for licensure. Contractors in the state of Nevada typically have to complete a minimum of 4,000 hours or four years of experience (within the 10 years prior to applying for a license). 

This experience could be as a journeyperson, foreperson, supervising employee, or contractor, although you may substitute approved education or training for a portion of the experience requirement.

In addition, you’ll have to submit an application complete with proof of insurance (workers’ compensation), a financial statement and bank verification form, and a surety bond (amount TBD by the Nevada State Contractors Board). Finally, you must pass two state exams: the Contractor Management Survey Exam and the C-2D Low Voltage Contractor Exam.

Contractor Management Survey Exam

This exam must be taken and passed by anyone interested in a contractor license in Nevada. It’s an open-book test featuring 60 questions that cover topics like:

• Estimating and Bidding
• Licensing
• Financial Management
• Lien Laws
• Labor Laws
• Tax Laws
• Contracts
• Project Management
• Environmental and Safety
• Risk Management

You will have 120 minutes to complete the exam, and you must answer at least 75% of the questions correctly to pass.

C-2D Low Voltage Contractor Exam

In addition to the Contractor Management Survey Exam, you’ll have to pass a trade exam related to your specialization. The C-2D Low Voltage Contractor Exam is an open-book test that covers topics such as:

• Sound and Communications
• Branch Circuits, Services, Feeders, and Overcurrent Protection
• Conductors
• Calculations and General Knowledge 
• Bonding and Grounding 
• Power Supplies
• Intrusion Alarm Systems
• General Use Equipment and Utilization 
• Enclosures and Raceways 

This exam consists of 35 questions, and you must answer a minimum of 25 correctly to pass. You will have one hour to complete the test.
