Master Cosmetologist Licensing & Exam Prep
If you wish to make a living doing hair in the state of Georgia you must first obtain a license. The Georgia State Board of Cosmetology and Barbering is the body responsible for licensing and industry regulations. The board requires cosmetologist to obtain formal training from an apprenticeship or school as well as pass two exams. What are the requirements to getting a license?
Georgia Master Barber License Requirements- Proof of a high school diploma or GED.
- 1,500 school hours in a minimum of 9 months, OR
- 54 Semester Credit Hours from an Accredited state technical college encompassing the 1,500 hours, OR
- Master Cosmetologist license crossover hours plus 19 semester credit hours from an accredited state technical college encompassing 300 hours school hours.
- Pass both the Written (Theory) and Practical exams.
How do I obtain a license?
To apply for your license, contact the Georgia State Board of Cosmetology & Barbering at 404-424-9966 or visit their website.
While the state of Georgia does not have any reciprocity agreements, you can still apply for a license via endorsement if you hold a license in another state. To do this, you must have all of the state boards you hold a license with send a letter of certification to the Georgia Board. You must also submit an application for licensure by endorsement along with all the required fees and documents.

The first step towards obtaining your barber license is to complete either an apprenticeship program or to attend a barber school. Once you have completed one of these programs, you will be provided with an application for the exams.
