Journeyman/Master Electrician License
Journeyman Electricians in Wisconsin are licensed to perform electrical wiring activities under the general supervision of a person who holds a license as a licensed Master Electrician or a registration as a Registered Master Electrician. No person may engage in the business or offer to engage in the installing, repairing, or maintaining electrical wiring unless the person holds a Electrical Contractor license.

Electrical Contractor License
A licensed Electrical Contractor shall utilize the appropriately licensed or registered individuals to construct, install, repair or maintain electrical wiring. Electrical Contractors also have the ability to bid for and contract electrical work within the state.
What are the requirements to getting a license?
Journeyman ElectricianExam
All applicants must pass the two-part Journeyman Electrical Exam (pre-approval is required)Experience/Education
- Complete federal or state-approved Electrical Construction Apprenticeship program OR
- Obtain 8,000 hours over a 48 month period OR 1,000 hours per year for the last 5 years.
- Each full time semester enrolled in school or program will count for 500 hours
- Maximum of 2,000 hours or 2 years of education will be credited towards required experience
Master ElectricianExam
All applicants must pass the Master Electrical Exam (pre-approval is required)Experience/Education
- Obtain Bachelor's or Master's degree in electrical engineering from accredited engineering college or university OR
- Complete at least 12 months of experience as a licensed Journeyman Electrician. OR
- Obtain 10,000 hours over a 60 month period OR 1,000 hours per year for the last 7 years.
- Each full time semester enrolled in school or program will count for 500 hours
- Maximum of 3,000 hours or 3 years of education will be credited towards required experience
Electrical Contractor- The person applying for an Electrical Contractor license shall be the owner of the contracting business, a partner in the contracting business applying on behalf of a partnership, or the chairman of the board or chief executive officer applying on behalf of the contracting corporation.
- Provide proof of compliance or exemption from state workers' compensation and unemployment compensation program requirements.
How do I obtain a license?
To apply for your license, contact the Wisconsin Department of Safety and Professional Services at 608-266-2112 or visit their website.
The state requires 24 hours of continuing education prior to each renewal. Also, Wisconsin has no reciprocity agreements for this license type.

How do I pass the exam?
The Wisconsin exams are open book. The references below are permitted to be tabbed, highlighted, and used during your test! Unfortunately, our online course is NOT permitted to be accessed during the State exam.
