Journeyman / Master Plumber and Plumbing Contractor Licensing, Education & Exam Prep

A Journeyman Plumber in West Virginia is licensed to instruct and supervise the work of a plumber in training.

Master Plumber
A Master Plumber in West Virginia is able to design Plumbing systems and to design plumbing systems, and to instruct and supervise the plumbing work of journeyman plumbers, and plumbers in training.

Plumbing Contractor
A Plumbing Contractor in West Virginia engages in the installation, maintenance, extension and alteration of piping, plumbing fixtures, plumbing appliances and plumbing appurtenances, 3 venting systems and public or private water supply systems within or adjacent to any building or structure; included in this definition is installation of gas piping, chilled water piping in connection with refrigeration processes and comfort cooling, hot water piping in connection with building heating and piping for stand pipes.
What are the requirements to getting a license?
Journeyman Plumber- A minimum of 8,000 hours or 4 years’ actual, hands-on work Plumbing work experience
- Schedule exam through the West Virginia State Office of the Fire Marshall
- Submit completed, signed, and notarized application with appropriate licensing fee
Master Plumber- Provide proof of 12,000 hours of plumbing experience
- Schedule exam through the West Virginia State Office of the Fire Marshall
- Submit completed, signed, and notarized application with appropriate licensing fee
Plumbing Contractor- Pass West Virginia Business and Law and Plumbing Contractor Exam
- Register the business with the West Virginia State Tax Department
- Provide Certificate of Authority (if required)
- Provide Wage Bond
- Provide proof of insurance
- Complete Application/Experience/Affidavit
- Submit completed, signed, and notarized application with appropriate licensing fee
How do I obtain a license?
To apply for your license, contact the West Virginia Contractor Licensing Board at 304-558-7890 or visit their website.
West Virginia does not require each licensee to complete Continuing Education prior to each renewal. West Virginia has reciprocity arrangements on an individual basis.

In order to sit for the exam, you must submit the application for licensure to the state. It must include verified education and work experience as required by the state. Once approved, the state will contact you with an exam date and time.

After completing all the steps above, it will be time to apply through the Contractor Licensing Board to obtain your West Virginia General Contractor License. Which exam do I need to take?
To schedule the Plumbing Contractor exam, applicants may contact ProV at (801)-733-4455 or their website. The Master and Journeyman exams are scheduled through the West Virginia State Office of the Fire Marshall.
Note: As of September 2024, the West Virginia contractor licensing exams will be administered by ProV Exams. The previous references for the exams administered by PSI may still be used until April 2025.

How do I pass the exam?
The West Virginia Journeyman / Master Plumber and Plumbing Contractor exams are open book. These references are permitted to be tabbed and highlighted! Unfortunately, our online course is NOT permitted to be accessed during the State exam.
