A General Building Contractor in West Virginia may engage in work dealing with commercial or private structures built, being built or to be built for the support, shelter and enclosure of persons, animals, chattels or movable property of any kind, requiring in the construction the use of more than two contractor classifications, or a person who supervises the whole or any part of such construction.

- Register the business with the West Virginia State Tax Department
- Provide Certificate of Authority (if required)
- Provide Wage Bond
- Provide proof of insurance
How do I obtain a license?
To apply for your license, contact the West Virginia Contractor Licensing Board at 304-558-7890 or visit their website.
West Virginia does not require each licensee to complete Continuing Education prior to each renewal. West Virginia has reciprocity arrangements on an individual basis.

In order to sit for the exam, you must first submit the contractor license application. It must include verified education and work experience as required by the state. Once approved, the state will contact you with an exam date and time.
After studying with RocketCert, you will be on your way to passing the required State exam(s) (see below). Pre-approval is required. Testing centers are setup throughout the state of West Virginia in larger cities.

West Virginia Contractors must pass two examinations: Business Law and Trade exam.
Note: As of September 2024, the West Virginia contractor licensing exams will be administered by ProV Exams. The previous references for the exams administered by PSI may still be used until April 2025.

How do I pass the exam?
The West Virginia General Building Contractor exams are open book. These references are permitted to be tabbed and highlighted! Unfortunately, our online course is NOT permitted to be accessed during the State exam.
