Washington Journeyman/Contractor Plumbing License and Exam
Journeyman Plumber Licensing & Exam Prep
This page outlines the requirements and abilities of Journeyman Plumbers. Plumber license applicants are required to pass theoretical and practical exams. Once the license is obtained, licensees must complete 16 hours of continuing education prior to each license renewal.

Journeyman Plumber
A Journeyman Plumber is licensed to engage in installing, altering, repairing and renovating potable water systems, liquid waste systems and medical gas piping systems in the footprint of a building.
What are the requirements to getting a license?
Journeyman Plumber- Pass the Plumbing Theory and Plumber Practical exams
- Applicants must also:
- Have 4 years or more (at least 8,000 hours) working as a plumber trainee under the supervision of a certified journey level plumber
- Have 2 years or more (at least 4,000 hours) must be spent working in commercial or industrial installations
- Prior to testing, all applicants are required to take 16 hours of Washington State approved continuing education with a minimum of 4 hours being from the industry related electrical category.
How do I obtain a license?
To apply for your license, contact the Washington State Department of Labor & Industries at 360-902-5207 or visit their website.
16 hours of continuing education is required each licensing period prior to renewal. Washington has reciprocity agreements with Idaho.

- Total Questions: 100
- Passing Score: 70 correct
- CLOSED BOOK
Topics include: Washington State Amendments taken from Chapters 1 – 10 and 15, 16 and 17
Part 2
- A waste and vent pipe sizing drawing based on sizing and design methods from Chapter 7
Part 3
- A water pipe sizing drawing based on sizing and design methods from Chapter 6
How do I pass the exam?
The Washington exams are open book. The references below are permitted to be tabbed, highlighted, and used during your test! Unfortunately, our online course is NOT permitted to be accessed during the State exam.
