Interested in becoming an electrician in the Virgin Islands? A license is required for before any electrical work or bidding can take place. There are three levels of electrical licenses that you can obtain. These are Journeyman, Master, and Contractor electrical licenses. What are the requirements for an electrical license in the Virgin Islands?
Journeyman Electrical License Requirements- A complete and notarized Journeyman Application
- Must have at least 4 years as an apprentice or worker training under a licensed Master or Contractor Electrician
- You may apply 1500 hours or more of study in an accredited, approved school towards the experience requirement
- A letter from your employer and three 2x2 passport size photos of yourself
- Registration fee - $50
- Tax clearance letter
- A letter from your employer certifying the journeyman's apprenticeship
- Signed conditional agreement between journeyman and employer
- A journeyman card, valid and approved by another municipality or community of the United States of America may be considered by the board or given credit. This card must be kept up to date and not be expired by more than one (1) year and not revoked for unprofessional conduct
Master Electrical License Requirements- A complete and notarized application
- Three 2x2 photos of the applicant
- One letter of favorable character testimony
- Two letters of professional reference from a licensed contractor
- Proof of their certification
- Has knowledge of the applicant's work in the electrical field
- Five years of experience in the trade as a journeyman
- College or trade school transcript identifying courses and/or degrees in the electrical field should be sent directly from the institution
- Verification of registration and/or licensure from another state
- Payment of required fees
- Pass the Master Electrician Exam
Electrical Contractor License RequirementsAny person holding a Master Electrician's License issued in the Virgin Islands may, upon application to the Board, be granted an Electrical Contractor's License without the necessity of taking a written examination if he/she meets all the other requirements:
- File with the Board, in such form as the Board requires
- Proof that he/she carries all insurance required by law, including but not limited to, workmen's compensation and general liability insurance
- Be able to prove to the Board that he/she is financially responsible
- Show that he/she has a regular place of business at a specified address in the Virgin Islands. Address of business should be in a business zone as regulated by law and should be kept open during usual business hours
- A person serving as such representative under such license shall devote full time to the business for which the license is issued and shall personally sign applications for certificate of electrical inspection
How do I obtain a license?
To apply for your license, contact the U.S. Virgin Islands Department of Licensing and Consumer Affairs (DLCA) at 340-713-3522 or visit their website.
The Virgin Islands has reciprocity agreements with other electrical licenses in the United States. If you hold an active license in a different jurisdiction, it may be recognized in the Virgin Islands. Contact the licensing board for more info on this process.

How do I pass the exam?
The Virgin Islands Electrical Exam is open book. The references below are permitted to be tabbed, highlighted, and used during your test! Unfortunately, our online course is NOT permitted to be accessed during the State exam.
