Utah Residential Plumbing License Exam Prep (Journeyman/Master)
Residential Journeyman & Master Plumber Licensing & Exam Prep
This page outlines the requirements and abilities of Residential Journeyman and Master Plumbers. Plumber license applicants are required to pass two exams unless certain requirements are met. Once the license is obtained, licensees must complete 12 hours of continuing education prior to each license renewal.

Residential Journeyman Plumber
A Residential Journeyman Plumber is licensed to engage in the plumbing trade as limited to the plumbing of residential buildings.

Residential Master Plumber
A Residential Master Plumber is licensed to engage in the plumbing trade as limited to the plumbing of residential buildings.
What are the requirements to getting a license?
Residential Journeyman Plumber- Pass the Plumbing Theory and Plumber Practical exams
- Obtain General Liability Insurance ($100,000 per incident, $300,000 total) and Workers Compensation Insurance
- Applicants must also:
- Complete 6,000 hours of training with 432 clock hours of classroom instruction in 3 years as an apprentice
OR - Provide evidence of apprenticeship with 12,000 hours’ on-the-job training in 6 years
- Complete 6,000 hours of training with 432 clock hours of classroom instruction in 3 years as an apprentice
Residential Master Plumber- Pass the Plumbing Theory and Plumber Practical exams
- Obtain General Liability Insurance ($100,000 per incident, $300,000 total) and Workers Compensation Insurance
- Applicants must also:
- Complete the “Verification of Supervisory Plumbing Experience for Master Applicants” form
OR - 4,000 hours of supervisory experience verified by:
- Tax Forms: W2 or K1
- 2,000 hours from an associate of applied science degree or equivalent accredited program transcripts
- Complete the “Verification of Supervisory Plumbing Experience for Master Applicants” form
- Journeyman Plumber license holders do not need to retake the practical exam
How do I obtain a license?
To apply for your license, contact the Utah The Division of Occupational and Professional Licensing at 801-530-6628 or visit their website.
12 hours of continuing education is required each licensing period prior to renewal. Utah has no reciprocity agreements.

Topics Include: Drainage, Waste and Vents; Indirect Waste; Water Supply Systems; Backflow Prevention; Roof Drains and Storm Drainage Systems; Plumbing Fixtures (including water heaters and accessibility); General Knowledge and General; Specialty Plumbing, Interceptors, and Isometric Analysis; Fuel Gas; Septic and Sewer; Hydronics; Fire Sprinkler Systems

- Copper Brazing: 34 points
- Plastic Assembly: 33 points

- Time allowed: 3.5 hours
Practical Exam Materials
The following items must be brought to the practical examination:
- Non-programmable calculator (silent, battery-operated, does not have paper tape printing capabilities, and does not have a keyboard containing an alphabet)
- Torch(es) capable of brazing up to one-inch copper pipe and soldering copper assembly project
- 1 tape measure
- 1 tubing cutter (copper)
- 1 tubing cutter (PVC Schedule 40)
- 1 reamer
- 1 level with 45 degree reading
- 1 framing or carpenter’s square
- Tools to perform copper and plastic pipe assemblies
- Bricks to support work
- Safety glasses for soldering*
- *Safety glasses Due to OSHA Title 29, Subpart E, Section 1926.102 requirements and candidate safety, all candidates will be required to wear safety glasses while soldering during the practical examination.
- *Important If you do not bring safety glasses to the practical examination, you will NOT be allowed to complete the solder and/or brazing projects and will receive a failing grade on those parts
The following items will be provided at the examination site:
- Solder/flux
- Primer/solvent cement (for the plastic pipe project)
- Brazing alloy rods
- Scratch paper
How do I pass the exam?
The Utah exams are open book. The permitted references below may be tabbed, highlighted, and used during your test! Unfortunately, our online course is NOT permitted to be accessed during the State exam.
The exam prep includes math, isometrics, highlighting guides covering the topics your exam is based on, practice questions for each references, and unlimited attempts on our "test simulation".

- Guide to Tabbing - This section includes tabbing books and other test taking strategies to keep calm and focused during the exam.
