Journeyman & Master Plumber Licensing & Exam Prep

This page outlines the requirements and abilities of Journeyman and Master Plumbers. Plumber license applicants are required to pass two exams unless certain requirements are met. Once the license is obtained, licensees must complete 12 hours of continuing education prior to each license renewal.

    A Journeyman Plumber is licensed to engage in the plumbing trade as limited to the plumbing of buildings.

  • Master Plumber

What are the requirements to getting a license?

  • Pass the Plumbing Theory and Plumber Practical exams
  • Obtain General Liability Insurance ($100,000 per incident, $300,000 total) and Workers Compensation Insurance
  • Applicants must also:
    • Complete 8,000 hours of training with 576 clock hours of classroom instruction in 4 years
      OR
    • Provide evidence of apprenticeship with 16,000 hours’ on-the-job training in 8 years

  • Pass the Plumbing Theory and Plumber Practical exams
  • Obtain General Liability Insurance ($100,000 per incident, $300,000 total) and Workers Compensation Insurance
  • Applicants must also:
    • Complete the “Verification of Supervisory Plumbing Experience for Master Applicants” form
      OR
    • 4,000 hours of supervisory experience verified by:
      • Tax Forms: W2 or K1
      • 2,000 hours from an associate of applied science degree or equivalent accredited program transcripts
  • Journeyman Plumber license holders do not need to retake the practical exam

How do I obtain a license?

To apply for your license, contact the Utah The Division of Occupational and Professional Licensing at 801-530-6628 or visit their website.

12 hours of continuing education is required each licensing period prior to renewal. Utah has no reciprocity agreements.

The following items must be brought to the practical examination:

  • Non-programmable calculator (silent, battery-operated, no alphabetical keyboard, no paper tape)
  • Torch capable of soldering 1" copper assembly project.
  • 1 tape measure
  • 1 tubing cutter (copper)
  • 1 tubing cutter (PVC Schedule 40)
  • 1 reamer
  • 1 level with 45 degree reading
  • 1 framing or carpenter’s square
  • Tools to perform copper and plastic pipe assemblies
  • All consumables, including:
    • Solder / flux
    • Primer / solvent cement (for plastic pipe project)
  • Safety glasses for soldering*
  • Project materials (specified below)

Candidates are responsible for bringing all material to complete the projects. Below is the minimum material needed to complete the projects.

    Copper Project:

  • 16" length of 1" Pipe
  • 30" length of 3/4" Pipe
  • One - 1" x 3/4" cu Tee
  • Two - 1" copper caps
  • Three - 3/4" copper 45° elbows
  • Two - 3/4" copper 90° elbows
  • One - 3/4" copper MIP adapter

  • PVC Project:

  • 15-3/4" length of 1" Pipe
  • 36" length of 3/4" Pipe
  • One - 1" x 3/4" PVC Tee
  • Two - 1" PVC caps
  • Two - 3 - 3/4" PVC 45° elbows

How do I pass the exam?

The Utah exams are open book. The references below are permitted to be tabbed, highlighted, and used during your test! Unfortunately, our online course is NOT permitted to be accessed during the State exam.

The exam prep includes math, isometrics, highlighting guides covering the topics your exam is based on, practice questions for each references, and unlimited attempts on our "test simulation".
