What are the Utah Burglar Alarm Qualifier License requirements?

  • At least 6,000 hours of experience in a lawfully operated alarm company, with a minimum of 2,000 hours in a managerial, supervisory, or administrative role;

  • OR


  • A combination of 6,000 hours in an alarm company and 2,000 hours in a managerial, supervisory, or administrative position in a construction company.

  • Also,


  • Qualifying agents are required to pass the Utah Burglar Alarm Law and Rule Examination and the Burglar Alarm Qualifier Examination.
  • Applicants must submit fingerprint cards and undergo criminal background checks conducted by the Bureau of Criminal Identification.
  • Certificate of insurance from a state-licensed insurance provider. This certificate must show proof of comprehensive public liability coverage with minimum limits of $300,000 per occurrence and $1,000,000 aggregate.

  • A qualifying agent may only be the qualifier for one Alarm Contractor Company, and they must be a full time employee.
  • An alarm company may only have 1 designated qualifying agent (DQA) but may have more than 1 qualifying agent (QA).
  • The DQA must hold all classifications that the company has.
  • A QA only needs to have the classification for the area they are working in.

How do I obtain an alarm systems contractor license in Utah?

To apply for your Utah burglar alarm qualifier license, contact the Utah Department of Commerce, Division of Professional Licensing (DOPL) at 801-530-6628. You can also visit their website.

Burglar Alarm Qualifier Licenses in Utah expires on March 31 of odd years. To renew, submit the renewal application through DOPL, complete a background check, and pay the required fee. Ensure to update any personal or employment changes.
