What type of work can be done with the Texas HVAC contractor license?

Licensed HVAC Contractors in Texas
  • Environmental Air Conditioning

    This license class includes treating air to control temperature, humidity, cleanliness, ventilation, and circulation to meet human comfort requirements.

  • Commercial Refrigeration & Process Cooling or Heating

    A commercial refrigeration license includes the use of mechanical or absorption equipment to control temperature or humidity to satisfy the intended use of a specific space. Process Cooling or Heating includes cleanliness, temperature and humidity controls solely for production requirements or the proper operation of equipment.

  • Certified Technician License

    HVAC technicians assist a licensed air conditioning and refrigeration contractor in performing HVAC systems maintenance work.

  • Class A/B

    Texas Class A HVAC contractor licenses entitle the license holder to engage in each type of air conditioning and refrigeration contracting that is endorsed on the license in relation to a system, a product, or equipment of any size or capacity.

    Texas Class B HVAC contractor licenses entitle the license holder to engage in each type of air conditioning and refrigeration contracting that is endorsed on the license in relation to a system, a product, or equipment of not more than 25 tons cooling capacity or 1.5 million British thermal units per hour output heating capacity.

What are the requirements to getting a Texas HVAC license?

Texas HVAC Contractors License RequirementsTesting

Pass the exam with 70%

  • After submitting proof of meeting eligibility requirements TDLR will approve the eligibility to sit for the exam
  • All parts of the application process, including passing the exam, must be done within one year of the date the application was filed
  • Certificate of Insurance does not have to be obtained until after the exam is passed

Texas HVAC Contractor Experience RequirementsExperience

Completed experience verification form showing one of the following:

  • At least 48 months of practical experience in HVAC-related work under the supervision of a licensed contractor in the preceding 72 months; or
  • Held an HVAC technician certification for the preceding 12 months and have at least 36 months of practical experience in HVAC-related work under the supervision of a licensed HVAC contractor in the preceding 48 months.

Texas HVAC industry insurance requirementsInsurance

  • You must maintain commercial general liability insurance at all times while your license is active
  • Minimum Insurance Coverage (Class A License /Class B License):

    • $300,000/$100,000 coverage Per Occurrence for Property Damage and Bodily Injury
    • $600,000/$200,000 coverage Aggregate for Property Damage and Bodily Injury
    • $300,000/$100,000 coverage Aggregate for Products and Completed Operations

How do I obtain a Texas HVAC contractor license?

To apply for your license, contact the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation at 512-463-6599 or visit the Texas board of licensing contractors website to submit online.

Texas requires 8 hours of continuing education for the HVAC contractor license. Texas has reciprocity agreements with South Carolina and Georgia.

PASS THE STATE EXAM

The Texas HVAC contractor exams are open book. The references below are permitted to be tabbed, highlighted, and used during your test! Unfortunately, our online course is NOT permitted to be accessed during the State exam.
