Residential Contractor Licensing & Exam Prep
Rhode Island has introduced new licensing for Residential Contractors supervising new home construction and structural remodels. The Contractors' Registration and Licensing Board will create and manage this program. Non-structural work contractors remain under the existing registration system. Licenses are required from January 1, 2028, with program rules being established by January 1, 2027.

Residential Contractor License
An individual who posesses a Residential Contractor License in Rhode Island are permitted to supervise the construction of new residential structures and structurally remodel existing residential structures.
What are the requirements to getting a license?
Residential Contractor License The applicant shall include, but not be limited to, the following information:
- Drivers License or State ID
- Business, Mailing Address and Telephone Number of applicant
- Any registration number/license number issued by the state, or any city or town
- Statement of skills, training, and experience of applicant sufficient to ensure public safety and health
- Proof of Insurance
- Agent of Service for out of state contractors
An applicant shall also, at a minimum, fulfill the following requirements:
- Pass appropriate examination approved or administered by the Contractors' Registration and Licensing Board
- Satisfy all requirements of the rules and regualtions established by Contractors' Registration and Licensing Board
- Satisfy continuing education requirements as prescribed by the Contractors' Registration and Licensing Board
How do I obtain a license?
To apply for your license, contact the Rhode Island The Contractors' Registration and Licensing Board at (401) 921-1590 or visit the board website.
The state requires 2.5 hours of continuing education prior to each renewal. Also, Rhode Island has no reciprocity agreements.

Which exam do I need to take?
Applicants may submit an Application for Examination and Apprenticeship to the Board of Examiners. Once approved, applicants will be able to select a time and date to sit for the exam.
Residential Contractor Exam
- Contractor exams are approved and administered by the state. This exam is closed book. A score of 70% is required to pass.
