New Jersey Plumbing License
Journeyman & Master Plumbing Licensing & Exam Prep
New Jersey only requires Master Plumber applicants to pass three examinations - Business and Law, Master Plumbing, and the Master Plumbing Practical examination. What type of work can be done with this license?

Journeyman Plumber License
A Journeyman Plumber installs, alters, repairs and renovates plumbing in accordance with standards, rules and regulations established by the board and works under the supervision of a Master Plumber.

Master Plumber License
A licensed Master Plumber in New Jersey is able to to properly plan, lay out, install and repair plumbing apparatus and equipment and to supervise others in the performance of such work in accordance with standards, rules and regulations established by the State Board.
What are the requirements to getting a license?
Journeyman Plumber- Approval from the State Board of Examiners of Master Plumbers
- A $3,000 Bond
- Be 21 years of age or older
- Have the following education/work experience
- Provide proof of 4 years’ experience of learning and assisting in the installation of plumbing under the supervision of a master plumber or supervisory journeyman plumber.
Master Plumber- Pass the New Jersey Business and Law, Master Plumber, and Master Plumber Practical examinations. All three exams must be taken on the same day on the first attempt.
- Approval from the State Board of Examiners of Master Plumbers
- A $3,000 Bond
- Be 21 years of age or older
- Have the following education/work experience
- Completion of a US Department of Labor approved 4-year apprenticeship program and one year of practical Journeyman Plumber experience
OR - Completion of a bachelor’s degree in mechanical, plumbing, or sanitary engineering from a regionally accredited college or university and one year of practical Journeyman Plumber experience under a licensed Master Plumber.
How do I obtain a license?
To apply for your license, contact the New Jersey State Board of Examiners of Master Plumbers at 973-504-6420 or visit the board website.
The state requires 5 hours ofcontinuing education prior to each renewal. Also, New Jersey has no reciprocity agreements.

- Passing Score: 70% correct
- Time: 195 minutes

How do I pass the exam?
The New Jersey exams are open book. The references below are permitted to be tabbed, highlighted, and used during your test! Unfortunately, our online course is NOT permitted to be accessed during the State exam.
