What type of work can be done with this license?

Journeyman Plumber License
A Journeyman Plumber has the ability to engage in the actual installation, repair, or replacement of plumbing systems.

Master Plumbing License
A Master Plumber has the abilities of a Journeyman with the added abilities of contracting to do, or of superintending the installation, maintenance, or repair of plumbing, or both.
What are the requirements to getting a license?
Journeyman Plumber- Submit a completed, signed, and notarized application form
- Pass the Montana Journeyman Plumbing written and practical examinations
- 5 years’ and 7500 aggregate hours of experience in the field of plumbing,
OR - Completion of an apprenticeship program meeting the standards set by the Montana Apprenticeship and Training Bureau, or the United States Department of Labor, Bureau of Apprenticeship
AND
Master Plumber- Provide evidence of 4 years’ experience as a licensed Journeyman Plumber in the field of plumbing, with 3 years’ experience working with a licensed Master Plumber or in a supervisory capacity in the field of plumbing, which may run concurrently with the 4 years’ experience as a licensed Journeyman Plumber.
- Submit a completed, signed, and notarized application form
- Pass the Master Plumbing exam (pre-approval is required)
How do I obtain a license?
To apply for your license, contact the Montana Board of Plumbers at 406-444-6880 or visit Board Website.
4 hours of continuing education is requried for license renewal. Also, Montana has reciprocity agreements with Oregon, Idaho, North Dakota and South Dakota.

Applicants must submit an application to obtain pre-approval from the Board of Plumbers. After being approved, the Board of Plumbers will send an admission letter. Applicants will have to call the testing service GITS (Gainesville Independent Testing Service) at 800-997-2129 to schedule the examination.

Pre-approval is required from the testing agency prior to scheduling the exam

How do I pass the exam?
The Montana exams are open book. The references below are permitted to be tabbed, highlighted, and used during your test! Unfortunately, our online course is NOT permitted to be accessed during the State exam.
The exam prep includes math, isometrics, highlighting guides covering the topics your exam is based on, practice questions for each references, and unlimited attempts on our "test simulation".
Online Exam Prep Includes:
- Isometrics Lessons - Here, we teach you math concepts for sizing water supply pipe, drain pipe, and vent pipe based on drawings.
- Highlighting Guides - Introduce the critical information in your book(s). This will familiarize you with each book’s content and its layout.
- Quizzes - These practice quizzes are based on each individual book/reference. They reinforce key concepts.
- Test Simulation / Practice Exam - Comprehensive exams randomly generated from our database of questions. Test simulations are restricted by time, and hints are disabled. Test simulations are as close to the real exam as you can get.
- Guide to Tabbing - This section includes tabbing books and other test taking strategies to keep calm and focused during the exam.
Statutes, Rules and Uniform Plumbing Code book amendments will be provided by the proctor at the examination. The candidates are responsible for bringing their own 2018 Uniform Plumbing Code book.
