What type of work can be done with this license?

Journeyman Electrical License
A Journeyman Electrician has the ability to engage in the actual installation, repair, or replacement of Electrical systems.
-
Master Electrical License
A Master Electrician has the abilities of a Journeyman with the added abilities of contracting to do, or of superintending the installation, maintenance, or repair of Electrical, or both.
What are the requirements to getting a license?
Residential/Journeyman Electrical- Submit a completed, signed, and notarized application form
- Pass the required Electrical exam (pre-approval is required)
- Complete an approved apprenticeship program in the electrical trade
OR - Complete an appropriate training program conducted by a bona fide union or trade association
And complete one of the following:
Master Electrical- Submit a completed, signed, and notarized application form
- Pass the Master Electrical exam (pre-approval is required)
- Be a graduate electrical engineer of an accredited college or university and have a minimum of 2,000 hours of legally obtained practical electrical experience
OR - Have at least 8,000 hours of legally obtained journeyman level experience in planning, laying out, or supervising the installation and repair of wiring, apparatus, or equipment for electrical light, heat, and power
And complete one of the following:
How do I obtain a license?
To apply for your license, contact the State Electrical Board at 406-444-6880 or visit Board Website.
16 hours of continuing education is required for license renewal. Also, Montana has Journeyman reciprocity agreements with Alaska, Arkansas, Colorado, Minnesota, North Dakota, New England, New Hampshire, New Mexico, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Utah, and Wyoming.

Applicants must submit an application to obtain pre-approval from the Board of Electricals. After being approved, the Board of Electricals will send an admission letter. Applicants will have to call the testing service GITS (Gainesville Independent Testing Service) at 800-997-2129 to schedule the examination.

Testing centers are setup throughout the State in larger cities. Pre-approval is required from the testing agency prior to scheduling the exam

How do I pass the exam?
The Montana exams are open book. The references below are permitted to be tabbed, highlighted, and used during your test! Unfortunately, our online course is NOT permitted to be accessed during the State exam.
