Manufactured Home Installer Licensing & Exam Prep

Manufactured Home Installer License
A manufactured home installer license only allows a person to install or repair a manufactured home.
An installer who also installs or repairs prefabricated dwellings may be required to obtain both a residential building contractor or remodeler license and a manufactured home installer license.
What are the requirements to getting a license?
Qualifying Person- Sole Proprietorship: The qualifying person must be the proprietor (owner) or a managing employee
- Partnership: The qualifying person must be a general partner or managing employee
- Corporation: The qualifying person must be a chief executive officer or managing employee. If the qualifying person is a managing employee, they must be an employee who is regularly works for the licensee and is actively engaged in the business of manufactured home installation on behalf of the licensee
General / Insurance Requirements- Register with the Minnesota Secretary of State/Assumed name Verification
- Disclose Business Owners, Partners, Officers, and Members
- Designate a “Qualifying Person” to take the licensing exam and continuing education
- Submit completed, signed, and notarized application with appropriate licensing fee and proof of:
- $20,000 Surety Bond
- $1,000,000 Liability Insurance
ExemptionsThe following are exempt from the manufactured home installer licensing requirements:
- Employees of a licensed manufactured home installer
- A dealer or distributor who does not install or repair manufactured homes
- Owners doing work on their own property
How do I obtain a license?
To apply for your license, contact the Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry Construction Codes and Licensing Division at 651-284-5012 or visit DLI website.
The state requires 14 hours of continuing education prior to each renewal. Also, Minnesota has no reciprocity agreements for this license.

The Commission will notify the applicant and DLI once an applicant has been approved to take the examination. The applicant will contact DLI to schedule the examination. Apply to sit for the exam on the state board website. Testing centers are setup throughout the State in larger cities. Pre-approval is required from the testing agency prior to scheduling the exam.

- Number of questions: 90
- Percent to pass: 70% correct
- Time allowed: 5.5 hours
