  • Journeyman Electrician

    A Journeyman Electrician in Massachusetts is able to install, repair, or maintain wires, conduits, apparatus, devices, fixtures or other appliances used for light, heat, power, and fire warning or security system purposes. A Journeyman is allowed to do work under their own license without the supervision of a Master Electrician however, they are limited to the employment of one apprentice only and they cannot create a corporation, partnership or hire additional employees unless they obtain a Master Electricians License.

  • Master Electrician

    A Master Electrician in Massachusetts can refer to a person, firm, or corporation. They are described as one who, by the employment of journeymen or apprentices, performs the work of installing, repairing or maintaining wires, conduits, apparatus, devices, fixtures or other appliances used for light, heat, power, fire warning or security system purposes. Each Journeyman may only have one apprentice under their supervision. The Master may also do electrical work themself.

How do I obtain an electrical license in Massachusetts?

To apply for your license, contact the Massachusetts Board of State Examiners of Electricians at 617-727-9931 or visit mass.gov.


Massachusetts requires each licensee to complete Continuing education prior to each renewal. Massachusetts has reciprocity agreements with Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Washington and Oregon.

Submit Application

In order to sit for the exam, you must submit the application for licensure to the state. It must include verified education and work experience as required by the state. Once approved, the state will contact you with an exam date and time.

PASS THE STATE EXAM

After studying with RocketCert, you will be on your way to passing the required State exam(s) (see below). Pre-approval is required. Testing centers are setup throughout the State in larger cities.
