  • Home Improvement Contractor

    A Home Improvement Contractor may perform or agree to perform a home improvement for a homeowner. Home Improvement work includes alteration, remodeling, repair or replacement of a building or part of a building used as a residence. Home improvement also includes work done on individual condominium units. Home improvement does not include work done on apartment buildings that contain four or more single family units or work done on the commonly owned areas of condominiums

  • Home Improvement Salesperson License

    A Home Improvement Salesperson may only be licensed to represent up to two licensed contractors in the selling of home improvements.

What are the requirements to getting a license?

  • Certificate of Good Standing
  • Two years of experience in home improvement work, construction and/or related education (Home Improvement Contractor Only)
  • Proof of financial solvency based on the scope and size of their business
  • A certificate of trade name registration
  • Proof of current $50,000 liability insurance
  • Pass corresponding examination

How do I obtain a license?

To apply for your license, contact the Maryland Home Improvement Commission (MHIC) at 410-230-6309 or visit the Board Website.

No continuing education is required for each renewal. Also, Maryland has no reciprocity agreements.

Preparing to pass the State exam is a critical part of the licensing process. Failing the exam can result in substantial delays before you are able to work under your license. We offer industry leading exam prep and all of the required books, at an unbeatable price.


After studying with RocketCert, you will be on your way to passing the required State exam(s) (see below). Obtain pre-approval by completing the Examination Registration form in the PSI bulletin. Send the completed form to PSI and wait up to 10 business days for approval to sit for the exam, then schedule a time to sit for the exam. Contact PSI at 800-733-9267 to begin this process. Testing centers are setup throughout the State in larger cities. Pre-approval is required from the testing agency prior to scheduling the exam
