Plumber Licensing, Education & Exam Prep
If you wish to engage in plumbing work in the State of Kansas, you must first obtain a license. However, plumbers are not required to obtain a license from the state. Instead, you are required to obtain a license through your local city, county, or jurisdiction. The information on this page is based on the requirements for Johnson County, Sedgwick County, Shawnee County, and Douglas County licenses.

What type of work can be done with this license?
-
Master Plumber
A person who works for a plumbing contractor and designs and/or installs plumbing systems, and who may supervise other plumbers, and has passed an examination as a master plumber.

Journeyman Plumber
A person who labors at the trade of plumbing as an employee of a plumbing contractor, and has passed an examination as a journeyman plumber.
What are the requirements to getting a license?
- Submit your application and pay the license fee and application fee.
- Provide proof of General Liability and Worker's Compensation insurance.
- Confirm the ID of the qualified person.
- Experience: A valid journeyman certificate for at least 2 years or 4 years of field experience.
- If the firm is a corporate entity, provide evidence that the entity is in good standing.
- Possess one of the two following qualifications:
- A Bachelor of Science Degree in Architecture, Engineering, Construction Science, or Construction Management from an ABET or ACCE accredited program.
- A score of at least 75% on the ICC (KGF) Standard Master Plumber with Gas exam.
or
- Complete the front and back of the contractor license application, and make sure everyone necessary signs the application (Qualified person, owner/ sole proprietor/ all partners)
- Certificate of liability insurance with at least $300,000 in General Liability.
- Workers Compensation certificate of insurance
- Provide test results proving a passing score of at least 75% on the:
- Master: ICC (KGF) Standard Master Plumber with Gas exam.
- Journeyman: ICC (KGR) Standard Journeyman Plumber with Gas.
Submit the following:
- The journeyman or master trade application form.
- Master verification form.
- Renovate Right form.
- General liability Certificate of insurance.
- Worker's Compensation Certificate of insurance.
- Submit proof of passing your trade exam:
- Master: ICC (KGF) Standard Master Plumber with Gas exam
- Journeyman: ICC (KGR) Standard Journeyman Plumber with Gas exam
- Master Plumber
- A score of 75% or higher on the ICC (KGF) Standard Master Plumber with Gas exam.
- 4 years of practical field experience or 2 years of experience as a journeyman within the plumbing trade.
- Journeyman Plumber
- A score of 75% or higher on the ICC (KGR) Standard Journeyman Plumber with Gas exam.
- 2 years of practical field experience within the plumbing trade.

How do I obtain a license?
In Kansas, licenses are administered on a county level and not a state level. Contact your local licensing board to submit an application.
Most counties require plumbers to complete continuing education to renew their licenses. The required topics and number of hours vary between counties. Check with your local licensing authority for the most accurate information regarding continuing education. Reciprocity agreements exist between many counties in Kansas. Contact your local city, county, or jurisdiction to find out where your license has reciprocity agreements.

How do I pass the exam?
The Kansas exams are open book. The references below are permitted to be tabbed, highlighted, and used during your test! Unfortunately, our online course is NOT permitted to be accessed during the State exam.
